A new week brings another instalment of Way Back Wednesday and for this edition, our goal is to name Christina Aguilera’s signature song. From her massively successful debut to her barely relevant later years, I’ve sifted through her entire catalogue and compiled a list of her definitive hits.
Unsurprisingly, Aguilera barely has very few songs that truly reflect her own brand of artistry. Indeed, as a result of her constant attempts at reinvention, her discography is very disjointed and demonstrates an artist who has yet to find her own voice. Check out the very short list of Aguilera’s hits below to understand my point:
“Beautiful”
“Dirrty (Ft. Redman)”
“Fighter”
“Genie in a Bottle”
“What a Girl Wants”
“Beautiful” is clearly Aguilera’s signature song but this small list of tracks highlights such a glaring flaw her discography. Most of her music sounds as though it was originally meant for other acts – Pink, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, MIA, Santigold and Madonna – and the disconnection between each era of her career has left people wondering who she really is as an artist.
Of course, I previously explained how such a lack of progression as negatively affected Aguilera’s career. So, as I shamelessly plug my article, feel free to read it by clicking here instead of dealing with yet another twelve paragraphs about the same issue.
What is Aguilera’s signature song? What other songs should have been mentioned? Vote in the Way Back Wednesday poll and share your opinion!
