Forget her ever-growing list of imitators because there really is only one Mariah Carey. Despite nursing bruised ribs, a dislocated shoulder and temporary nerve damage in her left arm, the diva of all divas still performed at the MLB All-Star Charity Concert for Hurricane Sandy in Central Park yesterday.
Carey was backed by the New York Philharmonic as she sang renditions of “My All”, “#Beautiful” and “Hero”. However, the real drama occurred during the first ever live performance of “Looking In” that moved Carey to tears as she sent a not so secret message to those wannabe critics who have been mocking her recent misfortunes. For the non-lambs in the building, “Looking In” was featured on the Daydream album and was never released as a single.
“This requires a bit more stability than I have right now,” Carey said as she wiped away tears. “People who know it, sing along.” The thousands of fans who packed the Great Lawn were quite forgiving, though, and offered encouragement in the form of roaring cheers.
Still, although she sang every note in her set live, Carey was forced to axe “We Belong Together” from the lineup, citing painful breathing issues as the reason. Regardless, those problems didn’t stop her looking her best, and she covered her wounds with Gucci feathers and jewels.
