We all know that Justin Timberlake is a huge Michael Jackson fan but his new song, “Take Back the Night”, takes his fandom a bit too far. Released today as the lead single from his upcoming The 20/20 Experience (Part 2) album, the record channels the style of the King of Pop’s “Off the Wall”.
The first 20/20 Experience album has sold overĀ 2.06 million copies in the US since March. The followup will hit stores on September 30 and it will continue the R&B/Soul direction off the original with a few new surprises. So, is “Take Back the Night” a good lead single? Listen to the song below:
“Take Back the Night” is a great record that mixes R&B with Disco and just a hint of Funk, thus falling in line with the current themes on radio today. However, Timberlake basically ripped off Jackson’s entire sound minus a few “hee hee” and “shamon” moments.
Where is the originality? Where is the innovation that will truly set Timberlake apart as a trailblazer of his generation? I guess his 20/20 vision is focused on the past and not the future.
