Ciara has packed as much promotion into the release week of her new self-titled album as she can but all her work won’t yield the big numbers for which she was hoping. In fact, the record is on track to sell less than 70K copies and will be easily overshadowed by Jay-Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail.
Set to clock a top 10 slot on the Billboard 200 next week, Ciara is projected to sell 55-65K copies. Ciara supported the record with a string of live performances, including Jimmy Kimmel Live!, 106 & Park and Live! With Kelly & Michael, but still hasn’t managed to sway consumers. On the bright side, however, the album will outsell its predecessor, Basic Instinct, which opened with 37K copies in December 2010.
Meanwhile, Jay-Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail will have an even bigger debut than previously predicted. Instead of the 450K sales cap, the album is now on track to move 475-525K copies by July 14th, not including the 1 million free units give to Samsung Galaxy users last week.
