The numbers are in and the usual suspects have once again found themselves in the same position on the US charts as they did in the past. Indeed, scoring yet another monster debut this week was Jay-Z with his Magna Carta Holy Grail while Ciara started incredibly slow with her new self-titled set.
Magna Carta sold north of 527K copies this week to earn Jay-Z his 13th #1 album on the Billboard 200. The rapper has extended his lead among solo artists with the most chart-toppers on the lineup and is behind only The Beatles, who notched 19 leaders throughout their stint as a group.
Sadly, Ciara didn’t have similar luck as her self-titled album performed poorly. Although the record opened at #2 on the Billboard 200 – far higher than the #44 peak of Basic Instinct – it sold less than 58K copies. Yes, those numbers are typical of female R&B artists in the current era of music but Ciara’s massive promotional campaign, which included appearances on Good Morning America, a weeklong residency on BET’s 106 & Park, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Chelsea Lately, Jimmy Kimmel Live and Live! With Kelly & Michael, was expected to yield a larger sales impact.
