J. Cole has proven that a little humility goes a long away. After just three weeks, the rapper’s sophomore set, Born Sinner, has quickly outsold the egotistical Kanye West’s Yeezus and joined an exclusive list of albums that hold a special place in the history of the US charts.
Born Sinner topped the Billboard 200 this week by selling 58K copies. The record initially debut at #2 on the lineup behind Yeezus with only 297K copies sold in comparison to the latter’s 327K. However, Born Sinner has not only outsold Yeezus – 439K units vs 431K – but it has also assumed control of the chart’s peak position.
Since the launch of the SoundScan era in May 1991, only 76 albums that did not initially debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 eventually climbed to the summit of the lineup. Here is an interesting fact: Including Born Sinner, 583 records have topped the Billboard 200, so that means only 13% of those titles first debuted lower on the chart.
