You’ve see the list of the most successful artists in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 but how exactly did they earn their spots in the history? Well, this is your chance to learn something new courtesy of Billboard’s ranking of the biggest chart hits of all time, which is unsurprisingly dominated by the divas!
Although the top 10 of the all-time Hot 100 list comprises mainly male acts, female artists certainly represent throughout the full lineup of songs. Ranking highest amongst the latter group is LeAnn Rimes with her monster hit “How Do I Live”, which surprisingly only peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 in 1997.
Just outside the top 10 are Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” at #11 and Toni Braxton’s “Un-Break My Heart” at #12, both of which slipped 2 spots compared to the previous all-time list posted in 2008. Why did the ballads by the R&B icons fall? They were ousted by a pair of new entries, “I Gotta Feeling” by The Black Eyed Peas and “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO.
The top 100 list is based on actual performance on the Hot 100 from August 1958 through July 2013. Songs are ranked with an inverse point system where weeks at #1 earn the greatest value. As a result of changes in chart methodology over the last 55 years – the inclusion of Nielsen Entertainment airplay monitoring, point-of-sales tracking and streaming data – certain eras are weighted differently to account for chart turnover rates over various periods. This top 100 artist lineup is based on the same point system but aggregates all titles for each act that charted over the course of his/her career.
