It is unnecessary for me to repeatedly highlight the obvious similarities between Ariana Grande’s singing style and that of her idol, Mariah Carey. Indeed, if you simply listen to the opening section of the young songbird’s new song, “Right There”, you will might assume that it was Carey performing on the track. Well, minus some of her power and the natural character of her voice.
Grande has finally made her Yours Truly album available for preorder and “Right There” has been issued to iTunes as a promotional single. Interestingly, the record sounds quite similar to her Mac Miller-assisted hit, “The Way”, but instead features an appearance by Big Sean, with whom Grande was excited to work.
“I love [“Right There”]. I can’t say it’s one of my favorites on the album because they’re all my favorites, but it’s really cool,” Grande stated to MTV News. “[Big Sean] killed it. I love his verse.” The innocent, MOR girl next door working with a rapper notorious for his raunchy lyrics? I wonder where I heard that story before…
“We wanted to have writing sessions and, like, jam together but we never found the time and we never found the right song,” Grande continued. “We were talking about a few other songs together but it just never worked out and it never was the right moment and then finally ‘Right There’ came along and we were like ‘Oh this is it’.”
Yours Truly will hit stores on September 3. Until then, listen to Grande’s “Right There” below:
