Katy Perry and Lady Gaga engaged in a bloody cat fight on the Billboard Hot 100 during the last week but one Pop star had the sales to back up her claim to the summit. Emerging as the victor between the chart giants was Perry with her latest monster hit, “Roar”, which easily trumped the latter’s “Applause”.
“Roar” rocketed from #85 to #2 in its second week on the Hot 100 with 63 million audience impressions via radio (up 56%), 3.8 million streams and 910,000 plays via on-demand platforms. The record also garnered 557,000 downloads with the sixth largest sales week for a digital song in US history.
How did Gaga’s “Applause” compare to “Roar”? Well, the song debuted at #6 on the Hot 100 this week with an impressive yet relatively humble 218,000 downloads sold, 31 million audience impressions (up 97%) and 2.9 million streams. On the bright side, “Applause” will receive a major boost from the premiere of its accompanying video, which hit the airwaves earlier this week.
