The constant comparisons between Ariana Grande and Mariah Carey must be getting exhausting for both women as well as their fans but until the former stops imitating her idol, they will probably never stop. However, things took an interesting turn when Grande appeared on Hot 97 and was asked if she is aiming to take Carey’s spot in the history books.
“We can’t we all share fans?” Grande retorted as she addressed claims that she was slowly stealing other artists’ audiences. “Can’t people just appreciate people’s music? Why does it have to be a bloodbath? I was never so passionately angry about another [singer].”
When asked if she would ever want more #1 singles than Carey, who has 18 Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers, Grande responded, “I think that’s a ridiculous goal. I want to do well in my life; it’s not about comparing myself to other people’s success. I want to celebrate what I’m doing because I think that’s special.”
“I don’t want to compare because I don’t want to be let down,” continued Grande. “I want to do me.” Such a classy answer from such a humble artist. If only her camp, including executive prouder Harmony Samuels, would allow her to achieve that goal then maybe she would get the chance to follow her own path instead of trying to fill Carey’s 6-inch heels from 1996.
Regardless, Grande is a major fan of Carey, and although she names Imogen Heap, India.Arie and Whitney Houston as her biggest influences, she still lauds Carey as the best singer of all time. “I would be a very stupid person to say I didn’t like being compared to her. She is the greatest vocalist who ever lived. I think it’s a massive compliment.
There you have it, folks. Grande is a big fan of Carey and as far as she knows, there is no secret plot to have her overthrow the top diva. Watch Grande chat about that topic and more on Hot 97 below:
