We live in a world where Rihanna is being honored with the first ever Icon Award at the 2013 American Music Awards and real divas, like Mariah Carey and Celine Dion, are struggling to score hits. Oh well, at least there is a bright side: The latter duo can actually sing.
When I say “sing,” I’m not referring to a few random notes tied together by auto-tune, Melodyne or Sia Furler’s backing vocals from demo recordings that mysteriously appear on the final track. “Shine bright like a diamond…”
No, Carey and Dion can still belt, riff and run better than the gang of young Pop pretenders who now claim to be the best in class. I guess all that lip-syncing during the last decade of their respective careers helped to preserve their voices
First, we have footage of Dion rehearsing her new song, “Loved Me Back to Life”, in a ladies room shortly before her appearance on Le Banquier. Ever the perfectionist, she resorted to rocking the stalls with her powerhouse voice until she found just the right notes.
Dion made it look so easy to sound so flawless. How does she do it? Let’s get a hair sample and study her DNA.
Carey, on the other hand, was more eager to share her talents directly with her fans, and she let them bask in the glory of her vocal range and her sparkling microphone backstage at Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
Naturally, something always goes wrong in Carey’s world and her crew didn’t know the arrangement of “The Art of Letting Go”. That’s where being a clever songwriter worked in her favour, and Carey filled the gaps with a few extra lyrics and her signature high notes.
I may be wrong – as many of you will agree – but Carey and Dion are still in a league of their own.
Divas gettin’ money. The power of three lives on.
Just for fun, name a few artists in popular music today who can sing better than Carey and Dion. I know you Beyonce and Christina Aguilera fans are just burning with the urge to chime in so have at it.
