US Charts: Adele’s ’21′ Breaks Records While Katy Perry Fails To Do The Same

Her name is Adele so hear her roar! The Pop/Soul singer has achieved a phenomenal feat this week as her ’21′ album has now spent more weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 than any other release of the 21st century thus far.

The album clocks its 12th week the chart summit after selling another 76k copies. This accomplishment gives Adele the honor of having the album with the most weeks at #1 since Santana’s ‘Supernatural’ held the top spot for 12 weeks between the years 1999 and 2000.

On the other hand, Katy Perry’s ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’ has failed to break Michael Jackson’s record of 5 #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 from a single album as the track remains at #2 on the lineup. However, with the official remix featuring Missy Elliott only impacting radio and iTunes on August 8th, the song is expected to experience the boost it needs to climb to the top.

See the leading Urban/Pop releases from the top 10 of both Billboard 200 and the Hot 100 below:

1. Adele – ’21′ – 76k (total: 2.9M)

Timmy, I was thinking the same. She is trying to beat that MJ record, JUST so she can say she did.

I adore Adele and 21 is an amazing album.

Katy is queen of manufactured bullshit. She’s not worthy of matching MJs record. Now Adele on the other hand deserves it, raw talent without having to make all these remixes featuring popular people for a boost in sales

@Timmy @Che_Petrillo She really is. I mean, I’m sure anyone would think tying M.J. and setting a record of their own (as first FEMALE to have 5 #1s off one album) would be an amazing feat, but it would be true, honest success if she gained it just by releasing her records and leaving it at that. Instead, there’s the E.T. remix and the Last Friday Night remix, which will not only be released digitally on itunes, but on radio to gain airplay as well. Clearly, that spells desperation and selling out at its finest, not to mention all her songs this era have ticked the extreme generic mark. But on a more technical matter, I’m surprised Billboard is counting all her songs towards this record. Because, MJ’s record that he set was “5 #1s from a single album”. Katy has only released THREE records that are on the official Teenage Dream album, because the TGIF and E.T. remix aren’t on the album, so therefore shouldn’t be counted towards sales of the original song. But hey, this is 2011, where apparently anything in the industry can happen today.
I’m really happy for Adele though. While I don’t find ’21′ groundbreaking, I’m glad that an artist other than the big pop stars of today can have extreme success. It’s incredible that ’21′ is STILL topping the charts, and has sold over 8.3 million albums worldwide in 6 months, due to her appeal to the adult contemporary market, who are the highest album purchasers. Her, Beyonce’s, and Kanye’s releases actually make me interested in next year’s Grammy Awards.

Katy’s stunt screams of desparation. MJ got his record with no stunts. Adele has 8 more weeks to tie with Whitney’s TBG record but it won’t come easy. Jay and Kanye’s cd will be #1 for at least 2 wks or so, then you have Lil LWayne’s that will be #1 for at least 2-3 weeks then we’ll be going into 4th quarter with bigger releases. It’s possible

THANK GOD KATY PERRY song is slippin….I think its so tacky to try and hit #1 and tie the LEGEND with a remix that was done in 1 day. Michael Jackson has never released a remix to make his singles pop up the chart. Adele is the artist of the year no doubt–I smell at least 8 Grammy Nominations: she will win : Album of the year, Record of The year and Song of the Year, Pop Vocal Perf, Female—ARE ALL ON LOCKDOWN
