Way Back Wednesday: Busta Rhymes – ‘What’s It Gonna Be?! (Ft. Janet Jackson)’

This week’s Way Back Wednesday takes us back to 1999 with ‘What’s It Gonna Be?!’ by Busta Rhymes and Janet Jackson. Released as the 2nd single from the Rhymes’ ‘E.L.E. (Extinction Level Event): The Final World Front’, both the song and video are among the most memorable productions in  of the last 25 years.

Busta rhymes f janet jackson – what s it

Directed by Hype Williams, this video demonstrates the endless possibilities of Hip-Hop. Instead of rolling around in bed with a pair of hired strippers or smoking weed in front of a green screen, this clip took a completely different approach to bringing the lyrics of the record to life.

In a post Missy Elliott world there is absolutely no reason why rappers have become so lazy with their videos. Regardless of the suffering economy, Hip-Hop acts need to push themselves further if they wish to standout from the crowd.

Besides, if they can afford to rent cars, strippers and jewelry then they can surely make better videos. Real talk.

Thoughts?

True. Most rap videos are just the same. Rented cars, money, and half naked girls. Smh
