Aaliyah was tragically killed in a plane crash in 2001 just as her short yet meaningful career had begun to blossom. However, despite only enjoying modest commercial success during her lifetime, some individuals claim that many of the female acts who dominated the industry since her passing would not have flourished if Aaliyah had survived because they were simply “substitutes”.
