Beyonce Denies Stealing ‘Countdown’ Video Concept: “I Was Paying Tribute”

Written by TriniTrent | Filed under Beyonce

Beyonce has never been known for her originality but her latest scandal has sparked a fresh wave of public indignation with her actions. Shortly after releasing the video for ‘Countdown’, Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker slammed the singer for copying several dance moves and even the wardrobe from her ‘Rosas danst Rosas’ and ‘Achterland’ works.

However, Beyonce, who is also dealing with accusations of falsehood regarding the nature of her baby bump following her appearance on ‘Sunday Night’, has retorted by claiming that she was simply “paying tribute”. This situation follows a similar problem in 2008 where Beyonce was also accused of stealing her ‘Single Ladies’ routine from Bob Fosse until she was forced to state where she discovered the dance.

Read the details regarding the ‘Countdown’ fiasco below:

    Keersmaeker on Beyonce.

“I’m not mad, but this is plagiarism. This is stealing. It’s a bit rude. What’s rude about it is that they don’t even bother about hiding it.”

“Beyonce is not the worst copycat; she sings and dances very well, and she has a good taste! On the other hand, there are protocols and consequences to such actions, and I can’t imagine she and her team are not aware of it.

“In the 1980s, this was seen as a statement of girl power, based on assuming a feminine stance on sexual expression. I was often asked then if it was feminist. Now that I see Beyoncé dancing it, I find it pleasant but I don’t see any edge to it. It’s seductive in an entertaining consumerist way.”

Beyonce on Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker claims.

“Clearly, the ballet ‘Rosas danst Rosas’ was one of many references for my video ‘Countdown’. It was one of the inspirations used to bring the feel and look of the song to life.”

“I was also paying tribute to the film, ‘Funny Face’ with the legendary Audrey Hepburn. My biggest inspirations were the ’60s, the ’70s, Brigitte Bardot, Andy Warhol, Twiggy and Diana Ross. I’ve always been fascinated by the way contemporary art uses different elements and references to produce something unique.”

If Beyonce wants to be a true icon and continue the legacy of Michael Jackson, as her PR team inaccurately tries to force people to believe, then she will have to move beyond simply being inspired and learn to inspire others. There is absolutely no excuse for this kind of behaviour from any business or artistic perspective.

Indeed, although Jackson himself did not invent some of his more famous moves, he always paid homage to the originators so that his legacy would never be tarnished by accusations of theft. Until Beyonce learns to do the same without being pressured by the media then she will never be a regarded as a pioneer or a legend; she will always be a just another pretender to the throne.

Watch a video breakdown of the similarities between Beyonce’s ‘Countdown’ and Keersmaeker’s work below:

It’s a shame! She can’t even come up with her own things!

    • MyCooL

“The best performer out right now” *cough* Bey needs to learn that people save their receipts.

    • Rhea

Beyonce is a very talented performer and capable of many things, but c’mon, this is starting to look really bad.Everytime she’s accused of plagiarism and later on comes up with that same ‘I was inspired and paying tribute’.She should credit those people before her work comes out,not after she’s called out,it would look so much better. And if it’s choreographers who’re stealing, she needs to b more careful. It ultimately damages her goodwill.

    • Maverick

so where all deulsional bey stans at when you need? lmao bye

    • Jon

Michael always paid tribute, but Beyonce didn’t? Such a contradicting statement. If there’s anything Beyonce has learned from Michael, its to take what someone else has done and make it better. If you’ve studied Michael, you know that his moves and concepts came from Bob Fosse, James Brown, the Lockers (the robot & pop-locking), and many other artists including magicians.

As the great Steve Jobs once said:
Picasso had a saying: ‘Good artists copy, great artists steal.’ We have always been shameless about stealing great ideas… ~Steve Jobs

And this is why Beyonce will continue to be great! :)

    • MuzikJunkie!

I’m a stan but Beyonce this is not cute! Ima need you to stop being so inspired all the time and start inspiring others with your creativity and originality! I still love you tho and you’re still a legend! :)

    • Destined

Have several seats Bey. Clearly this woman isn’t pleased and its disturbing to say the least. And her and her team is a big fat joke for trying to put this thing in Michael’s place! She could never…….so many things are questionable about that whole agenda til its not funny at all.

    • Girrrl

If I would have pulled a stunt like that in college I would have failed the class and got kicked out of school. Plagiarism is a big deal and Beyonce needs to develop creative integrity (dance moves, songwriting *side eye*).

    • Americanboi

I don’t understand the difference between this video and Get Me Bodied. I mean it was CLEAR that she was obviously “paying tribute” or going for a certain theme. Get Me Bodied was paying tribute to A Rich Man’s Frug. Now I do agree that Beyonce needs to be more original. That’s a HUGE downfall of hers and just gives ppl something to. She needs a new time. Her whole career has been seeming “inspired” since Bday. I need you to do better Queen.

    • Able

All you did in this review is simply sum up what Kevin and Makael from The Skorpion Show said last night on their new video. Get better.

    • Bri

I just wanna know how is it possible to credit someone BEFORE releasing work. Wouldn’t that ruin the element of surprise? Imagine if MJ credited Jeffrey Daniel, or whoever, with the moonwalk (or the backslide as it was called then) before he performed it. It probably wouldn’t have had as big of an impact because people would’ve expected it.
I don’t understand how Beyoncé, and even Gaga, are seen as thieves when they never claim anything as their own. It’s usually the media and their fans who pin this “originality” label on them. Ironically, it’s also the media and the fans who call them out as thieves and copycats.

    • DB

This poor gal. With all her accomplishments, she still needs to copy and try to blame it on being “inspired”..How long before you stop being inspired and come up with something original. And also, she is not the second coming of Michael Jackson..another made up stan thing.

    • KendallJamaal

What the f’ck did they want her to do put an LED scroll on the bottom of the video saying “paying homage to…”

    • Bri

      This is a genuine question:
Did Keri Hilson cite her inspirations BEFORE doing the Pretty Girl Rock video? Or was that not plagiarism because what she recreated was so famous?
I just don’t see any difference between the two other than the fact that Beyoncé is being accused of stealing something obscure. Because no one’s saying anything about Audrey Hepburn/Funny Face.

    • ABC

I agree with what Bri is saying…its like people jump down Beyonce’s throat before she can even talk about her videos

    • BEYONCEFLOPS

@BRI…..Keri Hilson the whole point of Keri’s video was to pay tribute to pretty girls that rock….u will try it girl…the difference with Beyonce is that she wouldn’t be saying “oh i was inspired” or “oh this is a tribute” if people didn’t call her out on her shit she’d let you believe it was an original thought just like she tried to take credit for “Irreplaceable” when Neyo wrote the song by himself

    • Purple

Stealing is stealing. You can not call it an inspiration, homage or tribute after you’ve been called out by damn near every major publication, blog and news organization. That excuse gets tired and old very quickly. Beyonce and Lady Gaga continues to undermine their vocal talent with blatant bouts with plagiarism and trying to pass work as their own. The best way to handle a situation like this is by stating where the concept came from the day the video is released to be one step ahead, She chose not to and the consequences of that is now looking like a cheap fraud.

    • shorty1103

Jon *blinkstare* ….If you were lookin to justify why she’s great you sir have FAILED wit that quote smfh…..
this is a solvable problem for Bey, just say you were inspired from the get go before you release a video or attach a sign of recognition to the originals in the vid. SIMPLE!!

    • miss

      bey bey get it together
if you paying tribute invite some of the people from the original or say your inspired before people say u stealing
and trent in right everything cant always be “i was inspired” you have to inspire others
bey is a great artist and this new album is great but almost all the videos have been surrounded by drama. And to me some of the things she is being so inspired by are not even that great but bigger then that they dont even really work for the songs
bey still my girl but this “borrowing” mess is getting tired

    • WonderLand19

Beyonce is dulling her own talent and legacy by doing stuff like this. Taking credit in song writing when she didnt write the song, taking other peoples concepts for videos and live performances. Get real B, where are your morals? Just because you have money in the bank doesnt mean you can act like this. Wheres those christian ethics your allways claiming to have.
      Beyonce is her fathers daugther.

    • T

Beyonce just stick with the theme of the song in your videos, if you feel inspired cover it up to the point that we cant tell. cause the Stan’s and people who don’t like you are doing the most over a 3min video. A Big ass clock with a party scene or could have been the theme and the director and editor could have gotten creative from that point.

    • goat

she wore what jlo wore in her im into you video ,,, haha copy cat stop copying an her fur will drop her off the chart

    • Ariana

She just keeps saying that she’s “inspired” by pretty much everyone…. *yawn*
She needs to come up with something new. She’s a good dancer/singer, there’s no reason for her to be involved in copycapt claims every time she premieres a video.

    • DRB

      Tribute, never mentioning your “inspiration”
      Never crediting them
      Copying them verbatim
Passing it off as your own
Again. So is her whole career a massive “tribute”?

    • Adam

im sorry but Beyonce needs to stop . She is too talented to be so uncreative. How can u want to be an icon but ur not doing anything original lol .Janet Jackson was NEVER accused of stealing in her peak. All ideas were original and became iconic. This is getting ridiculous lol

    • ENTERTAINER

Inspired is the new plagirized! Do better beyonce, this is happening too frequently. Icons and legends lead not follow and steal . This is why I don’t regard you as either.

    • OnlyMiklo

foolish Beyoncé fans…. yall just as fake as that Baby bump she wore in that interview on sunday. Learn the business before you comment dumb comments on the blog. She could have easily got the okay before she releases these supposed homage pieces she puts in her video.

    • jady

Beyonce’s still on TOP! Thief or not…

    • Bri

      @BEYONCEFLOPS
The point of “Countdown” was to pay tribute to the 1960s and mod culture. Keri Hilson dressing up like Josephine Baker and Dorothy Dandrige and directly recreating Janet Jackson and TLC videos is no different than Beyoncé dressing up like Audrey Hepburn, Diana Ross, and Twiggy, and directly recreating this ballet.
I’m not trying to throw Keri Hilson under the bus, nor am I trying to defend Beyoncé 100% (because I do think what she did was somewhat wrong in not asking this woman for her blessing). But I just see a double standard when it comes to Beyoncé and even Gaga. They’re seen as the thieves of the industry, but they’re not the only ones who “steal” things. Yet they get the majority of the heat. I just think it’s a little unfair. If they’re gonna get criticized for it, then everyone should.

    • K

I don’t understand why this is a issue. Artists ‘reference’ past art ALL THE TIME. Why wasn’t a big fuss made about when Keri Hilson ‘referenced’ the past for her Pretty Girl Rock video & when JLO or anyone who ‘referenced’ Flashdance in the past. What’s the difference? It clearly referenced the 60′s & Audrey H. Please explain that.

    • Lyl

      Beyonce’s so damn retarded

    • Sparkd

The problem isn’t with Beyonce getting inspired, it’s with her history of “getting inspired without attribution” until she’s called out (**coughs Spain and Irreplaceable / Bootylicious**).

And let’s not count put her teams effert to brand her as an “Icon,” the next “Michael” or Oscar candidate. I’m familiar with her lies, but her Oscar-baiting during Dream Girls (credit on a song you didn’t write) is what turned me off from her.

    • Sparkd

@K Jennifer Lopez did reference Flash Dance for her inspiration. She even tried to get the same leotard, but Jennifer was larger than the original actress Jennifer Bealls. Try again!

    • jady

      @Bri

Co-sign. I think we have to just accept that Beyonce (and Gaga) are megastars, so they’re going to be critiqued for everything they do. Keri and the rest of them don’t really matter when it comes to mainstream media. This generation has Youtube, Twitter, etc., so it’s practically impossible for an artist to pay tribute without being called a thief. Michael Jackson took much of his most famous routines from Bob Fosse, Fred Astaire, James Brown, etc., but he was never called out for it because social networks didn’t exist then!

Beyonce is a thief, she has run out of material so she just stole from someone else, that’s showbiz, she should just step down and let people who are still left with creativity like Nicki Minaj take the stand
