When we reflect on 2011, there will be one name that will symbolise the year’s greatest commercial accomplishments – Adele. In fact, after holding the the #1 spot for an astonishing 26 weeks on the United World Chart, the singer has gone far beyond what any other singer achieved during the last calendar year as her ’21′ album has sold over 11 million copies worldwide.
Including the 4 million units sold in the US alone, ’21′ has sold over 11.18 million copies across the globe in only 38 weeks. Shockingly, the LP only passed the 10-million sales mark 4 weeks ago when it matched Usher’s ‘Confessions’ as the fastest-selling album to reach that point since 2004. However, another major force in Pop music is ready to challenge Adele’s dominance.
Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ has replaced Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’ at #2 on the United World Track Chart and is expected to claim the top spot on the tally from Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera’s ‘Moves Like Jagger’ next week. Indeed, following the release of the controversial accompanying video of ‘We Found Love’, Rihanna is a likely contender for the chart’s peak position as well as the leading slot on the United World Album Chart when her ‘Talk That Talk’ album debuts on November 21st.
