Lil Kim took a break from conquering the PayPal charts so that she could revive her mainstream music career with a new song entitled ‘Spend a Mill’. The track premiered during DJ Absolut’s segment on Hot 97 and provided a glimpse of the direction of the tiny rapper’s often delayed new studio album.
Kim was added to the Universal Music Group roster in August. Despite her many promises, there is still no word regarding when she will release her next album or if ‘Spend a Mill’ will serve as the project’s lead single.
Listen to the track below:
This song entails a catchy melody and could easily gain moderate airplay on Urban and Rhythmic radio alongside Rick Ross’ ‘You the Boss (Ft. Nicki Minaj)’. However, there is absolutely nothing about it that will guarantee the breakthrough success that Kim needs at this juncture in her career.
Indeed, as a Rap icon, Kim should be pushing the limits of her artistry and pioneering new sounds like many of her 1990s contemporaries, including Missy Elliott and Jay-Z, have done throughout the last decade. Instead, she simply took the lazy route by humming through thick layers of auto-tune about trite topics such as cash and cunnilingus.
Really, what separates this song from every tune on World Star Hip-Hop? Teairra Mari could have easily made this song for one of her mixtapes and Khia could have used it as the intro to one of her vlogs.
If Kim truly wants to reestablish her career and distinguish herself from the artists that allegedly imitate her then she needs to a lot better. Perhaps, she simply needs someone like Clair Huxtable to teach her a lesson.
