US Chart Preview: Rihanna & Mary J. Blige Fall Flat
For decades Thanksgiving week had been heralded as the busiest sales period of the any calendar year but 2011 has shockingly exhibited a massive sales slump across the board. However, one act in particular has encountered a disappointment to which she has probably become quite accustomed – Rihanna has missed the #1 spot on the album charts for a 6th consecutive time.
Hits Daily Double’s early figures have indicated that Rihanna’s ‘Talk That Talk’ album will enter the Billboard 200 this week at #3 with 197K copies sold. This number represents a 10K dip from the first week sales of her last LP, ‘Loud’, which entered the tally with 207K units in sales.
‘Talk That Talk’ was preceded by the #1 record-breaking single ‘We Found Love’ and ‘You Da One’, which has thus far peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100. Yet, as depicted by ‘Loud’, which has sold over 1.5 million copies in the US since its debut, Rihanna will probably enjoy consistent sales throughout the next few months as she issues a flurry of ringtones to the airwaves to bolster her success.
Meanwhile, Mary. J Blige’s ‘My Life II: The Journey Continues (Act 1)’ is aslo scheduled to have a slow start at #5 with 165K copies sold. In fact, the record will rank even lower than Drake’s former #1 album, ‘Take Care’, which will clock the #4 slot with 173K units.
Finally, Michael Jackson’s ‘Immortal’ album is on track to fall short of last week’s 50k-60K sales projections. The record is booked to nab the #23 position with 43K copies sold. Of course, all of these figures may change when Billboard posts the final numbers tomorrow.

How do you have 9 million followers all these #1 singles but cant push at LEAST 300k units? Like…i don’t get it. People like her singles, they don’t like her albums. I saw some1 describe Rihanna as a 1 hit wonder…11 times over…and these sales just solidify that. There is no excuse. And the “Navy” has to be the fakest fan base in history.

Rihanna is a not a good performer, her voice is getting better but its been bad most of her career. The fans don’t respect her as an artists thats why they don’t buy her albums. And where is the rest of Birthday Cake?

which also means Riri’s first 2 singles have charted better than all of the singles from ’4′! Riri has never had huge first week sales, but her sales are consistent.
Id much prefer an album that sold consistently for 6 months then had a huge first week and dropped.
Sales are bad indeed -considering her #1s and massive promotion- however as some of you stated is going to be interesting to see TTT on the charts in the following weeks. At this point you would expect her to have a number one album on her resume… at least!

Well being a singles artist will NEVER get you 16 Grammys. Only quality albums( with #1 sales) and featuring actual talented artists will put you in this class. Releasing bumble gum pop year after year…

The fact that this is supposedly her best album to date yet only 197K….after 6 years you should better. No excuse. And to RiRi: you would want her to push atleast 250k…AT THE LEAST. I’m not surprised one bit. Talk That Talk left little to be desired. That album was rushed and it shows, not only compared to her previous releases, but her first week sales. I need for some of the Rihanna Navy to come off their high horse and leave Beyoncé out of this. She has absolutely NOTHING to do with Rihanna’s success or lack thereof. Y’all need to come out of that fantasy world you’re living in and quit bringing up the fact that she has eleven #1 singles as your defense all the time. Is that all you have to prove? Every time somebody criticizes Rihanna, a Rihanna stan brings up Beyoncé. WHY? What the hell does Bey have to do with this?

B/c people always compare their fav artist to the best. Beyonce’s lowest selling album sold more then Rihanna’s highest. And after a MASSIVE world tour like LOUD it is good that that album did do well. If people over seas actually have standards like WE do in the U.S. Rihanna wouldn’t HAVE a career. She’s only sold 1.5 mill in the US after a YEAR. 4 has sold almost that in 6 months.
And of course the Grammy’s don’t matter. Because your fav can’t get any. You sound like a Britney Spears fan. go have a seat.

the grammys are a load of crap! any one who has been around from 1996 onwards, when Mariah has been snubbed, would realise this. The only people that care about grammys are Beyonce fans cause thats all she got.
Mary has nothing to prove in the industry. She’s 20 yrs, consistent, has sold over 60 million, 9 Grammy’s in different catagories. She’s won 10 billboard awards, she’s conquered the industry & billboard with record breaking 1st wk sales. She’s also had #1 albums & #1 singles. Mary has built her legacy & she is still the Queen regardless. Love her.

But with all that promo this aint right she does all award shows in US, UK , Dubai , Afganistan name it and with the massive world tour and the sold out tours in the states $195 or $200 ??? Nope we need a recount. As for the 10 million twitter followers SMH that should be atleast 500 albums. Again I need some one to explain these numbers. She is all I hear on the radio who is lying??? Not to mention the talk show rounds and magazine covers .
I actually don’t find anything wrong with Rihanna sales. Good Girl Gone Bad sold 162,000 first week (9 MILLION WW SOLD), RATED R did 180,000 first week (3 MILLION WW SOLD), LOUD did 207,000 first week (6 MILLION WW SOLD), A GIRL LIKE ME did 113,000 first week (3 MILLION WW SOLD)………… so I’m honestly not seeing why people are so thrown off. The album will sell consistently like all the other. There are so many people with #1 albums that flop. Chris Brown’s fame was a #1 album and hasn’t even sold a million and the US. Same goes to Beyonce’s 4. She has a #1 album but has yet to SELL (NOT SHIP) a million……. so say what ya’ll want but Rihanna’s not going anywhere.

Facts are Facts: TTT should’ve done more with all this publicity it had. 6 year veteran, 6 albums yet only pushing 197k…her stans too busy talking shit to buy the album. Truth is people like Rihhanna for fashion and her spunky attitude. She’s a singles artist, hence 11 #1s…don’t get me wrong, I like some of her music but for starters this album isn’t that great…too rushed and second it didn’t live up to the hype of the promo with sales. Some things need to be rearranged in her camp. After 6 years her first week numbers should outside the numbers her singles are pushing on itunes
The bottom line is that Rihanna is the kind of artist you don’t mind hearing for a few minutes a couple times a day on the radio, but you’d never dream of spending 45-60 minutes listening to an entire album. One song at a time is fine, more than that is overindulgence and her record sales have consistently shown this weakness. This is why her singles sell but her albums don’t and I don’t hear anything in TTT that will change that fundamental dynamic. She is what she is, a radio singles artist, and that’s all.
Yep, I was waiting for somebody to bring up Breezy & Bey once again. That’s what Rihanna stans like to do. We’re talking about the fact that Rihanna is six albums into her career and has YET to score a #1. Chris and Bey both have, so throwing around these alleged album sales “worldwide” and this “sold out” U.S. tour you speak of… I need receipts to prove that. The album is garbage. If it was good, it would be #1. I need for the Rihanna Navy to quit checking up on other artists’ stats and sales and go buy a few copies to help YOUR FAVE out cause it’s looking bad. Team Breezy and the Bey-Hive had no issues making sure their faves went #1 their first week. Quit with the fuckin excuses and accept it for what it is!

you say Bey and Chris have #1 albums, but those albums flopped. Would you rather have a successful album that doesn’t go #1 or a #1 album that flops??????? Plus she had no promotion. The only thing she did was perform on X factor. Beyonce did hella promotion and 4 had a good first week but a flop overall.
