Leona Lewis only announced her ‘Hurt’ EP two weeks ago but the collection has already been released. The standout song on the three-song record was the title track – a cover of the Nine Inch Nails classic from their ‘The Downward Spiral’ album, which was released in 1994.
Interestingly, the other two songs on Lewis’ ‘Hurt’ EP were also covers - ‘Iris’ (originally by the Goo Goo Dolls) and ‘Colorblind’ (originally by Counting Crows). None of these tunes will reportedly appear on her ‘Glassheart’ album, which is scheduled for a March 26th release.
Listen to ‘Hurt’ below:
Lewis delivered a beautiful vocal performance yet I was strangely indifferent to her version of this song. Truly, Lewis has sung enough covers in her short career and it is time that she composes something fresh that reflects who she is as an artist. If not then she will simply be remembered as a karaoke singer who had limited success with her own work and that would be unfair because she is immensely talented.
I kind of thought the same thing trent. Leona needs to stop the covers or else she will only be remembered for Bleeding Love.
She sounds great here! She might want to build on this here and use this song as a foundation for the sound she should go for. I see a great deal of potential in this.
She’s a one-trick pony. They have yet to find a great uptempo songs that she can pull off. Anita Baker made a career out of singing ballads so perhaps they need to start seeking out fresh talent that can give her monster ballads in the vein of Mariah and Whitney.
Honestly, Leona hasn’t released anything that has caught my attention since Bleeding Love and Better in Time. She is talented but someone needs to give her material that will showcase that talent. This EP should’ve had original music because having covers make this EP seem like something done randomly and not a precursor to her forthcoming album.
This was a treat for fans to hold over until the album comes out. I’d rather she release an EP of covers than put one on the album again. I wasn’t expecting anything else this year though so I’ll take this as a nice surprise from her.
Welcome back Leona.
great vocals, i think she needs to take more risks in terms of the arrangements, the chorus of hurt just goes on to sound like run and whole load of her other songs. she needs to bring unexpected chord changes.
the end was good.
I like the darker direction though.
I agree with @DOMOdotSCORE’s 1st and 2nd sentences respectively.
Leona clearly has lifted Camille O’Sullivan’s incredible version of this song. Unlike Nine Inch Nails original and Johnny Cash and Camille O’Sullivan’s covers Leona’s version lacks that final 5% emotion.
