New Video: Rihanna – ‘You Da One’

As ‘You Da One’ continued to tumble further down the Billboard Hot 100 this week – down two froms to #25 – Rihanna has released the track’s accompanying video. Directed by Melina, the video includes visual dedications to Stanley Kubrick’s ‘A Clockwork Orange’ movie, although it was far from as impressive as the classic film.
Rihanna’s previous release, ‘We Found Love’, was recently crowned as The Lava Lizard’s Best Video of 2011. Meanwhile, the song continued to dominate the Billboard Hot 100 for an eighth week – Rihanna’s longest stay at the top of the chart and the longest-running #1 single of 2011.

Rihanna basically did the same thing that Beyonce has done for years – put forward a brilliant video for her lead single that would generate massive attention for her project and then got lazy with her second release because she knew that the song would benefit from the momentum generated by its predecessor. Indeed, the ‘You Da One’ clip is quite lackluster and did nothing to encourage us to like the horrendous song.
What exactly did this video have to do with the lyrics of ‘You Da One’? Honestly, Rihanna just posed for a series of glmaour shots, performed an embarrassingly stiff wine and recreated some scenes of her ‘S&M’ clip with the only difference being that the ‘You Da One’ shots were filmed in black and white.
Rihanna truly has a knack for giving people false hope. Just when we started to think that she would compensate for her startling lack of vocal, songwriting and dancing talents by improving her skills as a visual artist, she released this filth.
Guess who is getting a lump of coal and a one-way plane ticket back to Barbados for Christmas?

I woulda expected a more colorful video for a song like this…. but its ok sum of it reminded me of ciaras love,sex & magic …+ut to say this is as lazy as beyonces followw up singles isn’t tru ,beyonces lazy follow up videos look even cheaper!
That was a major dissapointment. Beyonce has given some lazy video’s but her talent makes up for it but Rihanna, not so much.

it was cute but im not writing home about it. The song was talking about someone being the one and she must have been talking about herself cause she was the only one in the video. This could have been much more raw and visual and she should have had another leading man…. however Melina prolly would have fucked up and put another CB look alike in their… SMH

I loved the video. And I like the song. She’ll take them lumps of coal, squeeze ‘em betwixt her awesome thighs and make diamonds out of this gem of a song.
And no one can do justice in emulating or imitating ANY of Stanley Kubrick’s work…except for maybe Spielberg, but even then (“A.I.” with Jude Law and Hayley Joel Osment) Spielberg worked with Kubrick (up until his death) and ultimately finished the project. Film history trivia for ya.
The bowler hat and eyelash was a wink to Clockwork Orange. The rest of the video a nod to a great photoshoot, sure, and you’re right that’s how the Mighty Bey has done a lot of her video/singles in the past.

Yea this video is quite boring and I dont like the song at all. This song actually proves that Rihanna and her team will put any lyrics together, sing it in Rihannas ‘twang” and release it on the innocent public (wait wasn’t this already proven?)……its catchy so after hearing the chorus you’ll find urself singing it (not me) followed by a loud “WHY THE FUCK AM I SINGING THIS SONG?!” and then you’ll head over to iTunes or Amazon and purchase her Al—SINGLE (again, not I) and boom Rihanna and her heartless team wins again. Why is her team heartless? Because they seem intent on destroying our love for music by putting out music like this and on top of that they have her touring and appearing on my television screen to make that unforgiving noise–singing. The vid is pleasant, the typography is nice. Trent you can’t honestly expect every video to carry strong narrative, or to blow you away. Most vids have the sole purpose of promotion and songs like this would never get a video treatment if it wasnt a single, there is nothing to work of. The song is shallow, the beat is meh, the vid pleasant.
An artist like Rihanna who’s relevency hangs on the success of her singles definitely couldn’t afford a boring video like this as a 2nd single. TTT is still tumbling further down the charts and this will surely not catipult this song to #1 or even remotely help the sales of the album. Her flame is fizzling out.

UGH Someone PLEASE teach this girl how to dance!!!! I’m not even mad anymore that her vocals suck, there are many other pop artists out there that aren’t great with vocals like Britney and Madonna. BUT at least they could DANCE dammit!! I’m not here for Rihanna grabbing her vagina and attempting to wine! Or her senseless jumping when performing We found love live. A Clockwork Orange has rape, murder, and torturous rehabilitation as it’s main themes. So why would Melina and Rihanna “tribute” to that movie in a video for a song about good sex? I’m confused as to the connection betwixt the two.
The video is typical Rihanna, just a bunch of glamour shots, no male lead, and lazy hip movements. She needs new people to push her to take a risk with her music and visuals. Maybe she should hire you, Trent, I’m sure you could help her.
