The Holiday season is the time of year when artists from across the industry attempt to capitalise on crazed shoppers’ booming interest in Christmas music. Unfortunately, all singers don’t have the ability to handle the demands to lush vocal arrangements of such classics but Way Back Wednesday has gathered some of the best performances of some from our favourite artists!
From Destiny’s Child’s incredible harmonies to Whitney Houston’s thunderous vocals, this week’s Way Back Wednesday depicts singers applying their own spin on classic carols. Watch all of the action unfold below:
Destiny’s Child – ‘Opera of the Bells’
Luther Vandross & Chaka Khan – ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’
Mariah Carey – ‘Joy to the World’
Minnie Riperton – ‘Silent Night (Singing starts at 1:28)’
Natalie Cole – ‘The Christmas Song’
Whitney Houston – ‘Do You Hear What I Hear?’
Yolanda Adams – ‘O Holy Night’
Arguably, the most difficult task for any vocalist is to sing a Christmas song because these tunes have all been covered on dozens of occasions and comparisons to other artists are unavoidable. Yet, all of these performers did a phenomenal job, especially Houston, Mariah Carey and Minnie Riperton.
Just imagine how a Christmas album by Houston would have sounded before her voice was ravaged by years of drug abuse. Sadly, the answer to that is something that we would never know.
