Last week’s edition of Caribbean Heat introduced you to the genre of Soca music and now it’s time to showcase the talents of one of the field’s leading artists – Destra Garcia. Born and raised in Trinidad & Tobago, this sassy songbird is one of the most exciting acts in the region and has emerged on the global scene as a true crossover act.
The 29-year old Destra launched her career in the late 1990s as a Calypso singer but eventually expanded into Soca and dominated the genre throughout the 2000s. However, what truly makes Destra special is the fact that she is one of the few female Soca performers who sings and writes the majority of her hits; a rarity in the male-dominated field.
Watch some of Destra’s most popular music videos and listen to some of her biggest hits below:
‘Bacchanal’
‘Max it Up’
‘Wine It’
‘It’s Carnival (Ft. Machel Montano)’
‘Bonnie N Clyde’
‘Proppa’
‘Attitude’
Destra has the potential to go further than almost every other Soca act in the industry because of the colourful tone of her voice that works incredibly well on almost any song. Also, she regularly mixes the sounds of Dance/Pop and R&B into her tunes to create hybrid songs that garner airplay in the US and Europe.
