Did you know that Teena Marie only scored 1 top 20 hit single on the Billboard Hot 100 throughout her entire career?
Marie’s lone top 20 song on the Hot 100 was ‘LoverGirl’, which ranked at #4 on the chart in 1984. Additionally, only one of other songs cracked the top 40 of the lineup – her 1981 hit ‘Square Biz’, which climbed to #37.
Interestingly, only 9 of Marie’s singles ever entered the Hot 100 since the start of her career in 1979. However, she did garner numerous hits on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, including her only #1 song on that lineup, ‘Ooo La La La’, which was famously reworked by the Fugees for their classic tune ‘Fu-Gee-La’. The latter track peaked at #29 on the Hot 100.

I guessed “Square Biz” before i clicked on the article, lol. It’s weird how all these legends’ songs had such huge impact, but weren’t big hits on the charts.
Thats exactly why I dont check for artist’s “chart status” or whatever. Its all about the music, If its great it should be supported regardless if its “commercial” enough. People these days like to ignore music just because its not on the Hot 100 theyre missing out a lot of great music
Awesome, what a talent.
