Did you know that Reggae artist Maxi Priest scored a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Close to You’?
Priest’s ‘Close to You’ topped the Hot 100 in 1990 and became the only #1 song on the lineup in his career to date. Despite remaining at the summit of the chart for only 1 week, the tune was ranked as the 17th most successful tune on the 1990 Hot 100 Year-End listing.
Noted as one of the most prominent early figures of the Reggae Fusion subgenre that is currently dominated by acts such as Rihanna and Sean Paul, Priest has thus far placed 3 top 20 on the Hot 100 – ‘Close to You’, ‘That Girl (with Shaggy)’ and ‘Set the Night to Music (with Roberta Flack)’. His most recent entry in the top 20 was ‘That Girl’, which notched the #20 slot in 1996.
