The use of vibrato is common among talented vocalists but some singers overuse it. One such example came from Marsha Ambrosius who somehow managed to turn the US national anthem, ‘The Star Spangled Banner’, into a strange sheep call at the Mayweather vs Cotto boxing match.
With her trembling vocals and random runs, Ambrosius created a very unique yet confusing version of the anthem. If you don’t believe me then watch her at the Mayweather vs Cotto fight below and see if you could imagine a herd of sheep assembling outside the venue to meet their shepherd:

she can sang ! but she did way too may confusing runs and whatnot
the awkward moment when the crowd start booing in the middle of your performance. She normally sounds better then this, i don’t like it when she belts.
Lol. Trent you did to much wasnt even that bad…she just literally lets her voice run away from her….I think she needs a better vocal coach or something. Can’t wait for her next album though. I think she should write for Mariah actually, MiMi needs it.
p.s. olly_tei that embarrassing moment when you mistake cheers for Floyd as boos for Marsha…get it together.lol
@kingphoenix Mariah needs what? You could never shade Mariah as a songwriter. Period. She is a beast with a pen.
She was banging!!!!
Shaky vocals and that last run completely unnecessary. I’ve seen worse though, she didn’t do that bad.
I NEVER liked her voice. It’s so..squabbley, like a toddler’s handwriting. I thought this was horrible and it made me uncomfortable to listen.
@Lovey look at you getting all defensive, nobody is attacking Mariah’s writing ability….I was saying she could use the boost, creative revitalization, or whatever the hell you wanna call it. But since you went there Mariah is a good writer but she is not all that, its her voice that captivates…her lyrics are decent but common lets not get it twisted….
Although it wasn’t the worst I’ve heard, she could’ve done way better than that.
Writing is about more than lyrics. Chords, melodies…. Speaking of Mariah, she was in the audience so I wonder what she was thinking.
Marsha killed it….if your not a fan of her voice you may not agree…..she stayed true to her vocal style…..loved it!!!!
bleatbleatbleat BLEEAATTTTTTTTTTT
Awful. Plain and Simple. From start to finish. That song is not one that needs over-singing. All those runs were too damn much. She need not, ever again.
She has a very distinctive melisma/vibrato vocal style. The Star Spangled Banner simply doesn’t suit her voice well.
Oh F off Trent! Marsha straight blessed this song! I and all my friends sitting around me enjoyed her rendition. EVERYONE IS NOT MARIAH. You’re constantly throwing shade @ female artists. But Marsha is so summer! I love her and this version
@kingphoenix Mariah’s lyrics are “common?” If that is the case then you don’t know Mariah’s catalog. You must haven’t heard of “Looking In,” “Close My Eyes,” “Vanishing,” “Musicbox,” “The Wind,” “I Am Free,” etc…
@LOVE! Don’t waste your time on these queens who have no knowledge of Mariah’s extensive catalog.
Marsha sang the way the she always has! Lol. I don’t know what the big surprise is. I would like to her hear her do something less timed and rhythmic like maybe America The Beautiful where she could really bless the song. But this wasn’t bad at all.If you’ve ever heard her sing in Floetry or on her records then you shouldn’t be shocked at this perormance. She has a unique style and sometimes it doesn’t always translate to every song. But did she get PAID? lol. YES. End of story. & the fight went on.
Mariah is an amazing songwriter, to that person that seems to be hidden under a rock…
They booed because they were showing the different boxers on the big screen in the arena and the fans/haters were booing that, not her.
still tryin figure out why she’s singing the star spangled banner when shes from the UK. But i digress…
She practice it to be sung it that way. If you know her music then you know she loves too whine ( carry notes) in her songs, but everybody isn’t familiar with her work
