It is no secret that Whitney Houston’s legendary voice had lost its luster long before her tragic death and her final recording reminds us of exactly how hollow her instrument had become. ‘Celebrate’ is a duet between the late diva and Jordin Sparks that will appear on the soundtrack to Houston’s last film project, ‘Sparkle’.
Alongside John Legend, Sparks paid tribute to Houston at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards with a rendition of ‘I Will Always Love You’. She also presented Pat Houston and Bobbi Kristina with the Billboard Millenium Award.
Listen to ‘Celebrate’ below:
The life of Houston was truly a tragedy as we watched her crumble throughout the years. Of course, the loss of her voice was one of the most unfortunate side effects of her drug use and ‘Celebrate’ emphasises that point. Indeed, sounding thin, raspy, inflexible and strained, Houston’s voice was barely a shadow of its former glory.
Yet, nothing that we hear today could tarnish Houston’s legacy because she enjoyed several wonderful years as a vocal powerhouse. Simply remember everything she released prior to the year 2000 and remember her for the diva who she was before her drug use fully dominated her life.
Trent..i love your blog i do..but whitneys damaged voice doesn’t even sound as horrible as you were wording it.. it sounds like with practice..her voice would of gotten a bit better..it didn’t sound like permenant damage..
TRENT!!!!! IT wasnt THAT BAD!!!! Fair youre just comparing to her peak but it wasnt that bad!
It isn’t wrong to compare Whitney to her peak, as that is what her voice should have sounded like. I personally have been disappointed with Whitney’s vocal performances since “Waiting to Exhale” where she debuted smoky, huskier vocals lacking the power that had made her famous. Songs such as “Could I Have This Kiss Forever”, “Tell Me No” “Unashamed” and “You Light Up My Life” in many ways marked a vocal return to form for Whitney and I thought the worse was behind her, then “I Look To You” dropped and it was clear her voice was no more. This is sad, and a warning that we mustn’t think our gifts will last if we don’t respect our bodies.
All in all I love Whitney but I can’t say I’ll be running to the theatres to see her “try” to sing songs that she could have performed in her sleep 20 (or even 10) years ago. Trent, I respect you for being honest and fair in your review of this song.
By the way, this song is a cousin to “Million Dollar Bill”. It should move up the Dance and RnB Billboard Charts.
And this is the guy who praise Mariah Carey? The woman who hasn’t sang good live since the 90s…okay
This sounds like Million Dollar Bill part 2. but its a cool song.
Whitney sounds good to me. I wasn’t stellar but she doesn’t sound bad on this track.
Mariah Carey has one of the best voices of our generation whether or not she sounded better in the 90s. she runs circles around all our faves. #truth
Whay is she running circles around, a backing track? Cause her live voice is shit and her studio voice is manipulated
#Sit
Everybody please ignore Kenny. Let’s not make this about Mariah vs Whitney. This post is about WHITNEY.
I like the song but I wish it was just Whitney. Jordin sang to much.
Trent, you are so bitter and twisted… Whitney sounded good on this track.
Yes she sounded different to when she was younger but even if she sang on here like it was freakin’ 1984 you’d still have ripped it to shreds… #findachairandtakeaseat!!
we knew you couldn’t let it go down without saying something negative, your such a predictable hater. Whitney sounded really good on this track and its a nice up-beat fun song, not a power balled.
But your right about one thing, nothing you could say could tarnish who this woman was, hands down the best singer ever to touch a mic.
I kinda like this song. Waiting for the movie and that “His eye is on the Sparrow” ministred by Whitney. I heard it was Holy Ghost filled. Love you Whitney and I appreciate you Trent. Thanks for what you do.
Totally amazing, miss my Whitney!! ♥
Love it!
thin and strained? Trent, it’s kind of funny how you used words to describe Whitney’s vocals that critics have been using to describe Mariah’s vocals from Charmbracelet through present day. I’m not gonna lie, I can’t wait to see how Trent is going to attempt to twist Whitney’s “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” into a bad recording since all of the extras on the “Sparkle” set that day said how Whitney blew it out of the water. Seriously, Trent, you seem so dedicated to comparing Whitney’s recent voice to her peak voice. Okay, then I am curious: What do you think of Mariah’s voice on the Charmbracelet album, or on songs like “Mine Again” compared to her debut album? it’s been a decade and I STILL don’t know how the label allowed Mariah to release “Charmbracelet.” Her voice on that album was dreadful. All she did was switch between whispering and shrill, thin shrieking…oops, I mean “singing.”
Do yourself a favor, Trent, go watch Whitney performing the song “I Look To You” in Nottingham and take note of how that LIVE vocal completely blows anything, studio or live, that Mariah has sang in years. And then come back and try to rag on Whitney’s voice, knowing that Mariah’s present voice is “barely a shadow of its former glory.”
And I read a comment saying that is IS fair to compare Whitney’s recent vocals to her vocals at her peak. Um, NO, it is NOT fair to compare a woman’s voice at 48 to her voice from 20 years years ago. Even Celine, who has preserved a lot of her voice, can’t sing as well as she could 20 years ago. And Mariah…well, like I said, critics don’t call Mariah’s current voice strained and thin for no reason.
i love it, would like to see whitneys whole family in the video…CELEBRATE ppl *fans self* is that brandy at the end?
Whitney’s voice wasn’t that bad Trent. You’re pushing it now lol
Trent is a Tranny from the Caribbean and that’s all we need to know!
I like the song, Whitney sounds okay. I was never expecting 1999 vocals, I’m just going to enjoy it for what is it. My only problem is that I don’t think she finished recording the song.
I’m more excited for “His Eye is On The Sparrow”, Whitney sounded better on the ET clip & she got to finish the song. Goodbye Whitney, you’ll never be forgotten. A true vocalist.
i like the song, but she did sound worse than her last album. and people stop trying to make this about Mariah, she didn’t lose her voice to drugs so stfu. It’s Whitney’s fault, but we still love her
I don’t really like the song.
You exaggerate so much about whitney’s voice
sometime you need to calm the fuck down especially as i know for a fact you cant sing for shit. just a bit ott from you trent.
Sounds great!
Harvey Mason said Whitney still had 2 more sessions before she died that she did not get to finish.
@Cliff Mariah didn’t lose her voice to drugs I know, she lost it to liquor
This is just silly .The greatest singers dont sound exactly like they did 20+ years ago [Whitney , Mariah or anyone else]
Strisand just sold out 2 Oct. concerts recently,if her audience is looking to hear Babs of the 70″s they will be sadly disappointed. They are all still among the best regardless.
LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!
R.I.P.Whitney!!!
You morons always manage to get off topic! This is about Whitney! We love and miss you Nippy and hope you are hearing all the praises we have to give of your ENTIRE career. I love Whitney’s voice from 1983-2012. I love to hear HER sing. I don’t care about what condition these queens like to speculate that it was in. I’m very excited for Sparkle and I think I will be in tears during His Eye On The Sparrow because that Holy Ghost don’t play!
As far as Mariah, real fans know what Mariah’s deal is. She can still sing her ASS off! We need to respect our legends while we have them. It blows my mind that we haven’t learned anything this year. Mariah on her worst day could out sing any of your faves (in her sleep!) Pre-recorded vocal tracks are used by EVERYBODY in the business and Mariah is smart not to over-exert her instrument like she did back in the day. So haters have a seat and prepare for Mariah Domination 2012! *end of off topic rant* lol
Oh wow…Trent don’t throw shade at the dead! This song just isn’t good..it has nothin to do with the vocals of Nippy or Jordin
I see Trent is under different alias shading Queen Whitney.
That video proved Mariah is a shadow of her former self
Matthew Charley- Smith I knew tahti had heard that tune
before. I thank you for telling that is Million Dollar Bill.
Someone said that Jordin Sparks sang to much, I think
they delibertately made Jordin Sparks sing a lot of
the vocals to hide Whitney’s strain and thin vocals
to make the sound good.
no u idiot how about Whitney died and was only able to complete one session with the songs producers.
[...] New Song: Whitney Houston & Jordin Sparks – ‘Celebrate’ [...]
I’m a huge supporter of both artists but the song’s hardly anything special. It’s good, but not great.
