Aretha Franklin is the undisputed Queen of Soul and the focus of this week’s Way Back Wednesday. Really, as one of the most influential artists of our time, there will never be a time better than the present to honor her enormous contribution of popular culture.
With her rich tone, powerful voice and indescribable ability to interpret any material, Franklin has impacted the lives of every singer who hit the music scene during the last 50 years. She is without question the most important female artist to ever breathe on a microphone.
Watch some of Franklin’s most memorable performances below:
‘Ain’t but the One (With Ray Charles)’
‘Can’t Turn You Loose’
‘Chain of Fools’
‘Don’t Play that Song for Me’
‘I Never Loved a Man’
‘I Say a Little Prayer’
‘Natural Woman’
‘Nessun Dorma’
‘Respect’
‘Spirit in the Dark’
If you’re a fan of Whitney Houston,
Mariah Carey, Patti LaBelle, Luther Vandross, Celine Dion, Alicia Keys, Beyonce or basically any other artist then you are indirectly a fan of Franklin. She is the definition of a singer and ever act from R&B to Country music have been influenced by her musical stylings.
It is often stated that Ray Charles was the mastermind of Soul music but it was Franklin’s voice that took the genre to the global scale. Her voice is a landmark of the music industry and the reason why there is only one Aretha Franklin.
I love Aretha’s talent/music…her rude personality can stay at home though. No words can describe her Lady Soul album! Wish you included some of her 80s & 90s classics “I Knew U Were Waiting”, “It Hurts Like Hell”, “A Rose is Still a Rose” & “Willing to Forgive”.
Amazing post!
Great post!
I really think that her “Nessun Dorma” performance is a good example of her greatness because she was called in as a replacement at the last minute and still did an excellent job.
this time trent i give u 100/100
I must thank you Trent!!! I never understood the reason why Aretha was positioned as Queen of Soul nor why she is considered legend. Because I am only 23 and her rude behavior I would catch on tv…I steered away from her music. But that very first video with herself and Ray really turned me on her! That was one heaven of a performance!!!
HAHA YESSSSSSSSSSS You betta talk about the Queen, woo, we had this convo, and I didnt expect this post, I loved it and your right. Like we were discussing tho, I think it’s a crime that she had some of the most amazing jazz albums and songs I’ve ever heard but people dont even know she existed before the song Respect, wheres she was over 10 years in the industry and almost 10 albums in by then. And her voice………..that voice, nobody, not Mariah or the late great Whitney could top her power and soul in my opinion, especially between 61-75. Have any of you ever heard her song Skylark? If you havent, do your ears a favor and listen to this clip of her in 1964, I think this is hands down her best song, she’s ever recorded. Especially to @Jezzari since your new http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43o-hMZKpjo
NEW Michelle Williams MUSIC VIDEO!
Aretha is the answer for female R&B. Artists like Fantasia & Jazmine Sullivan that give the true essence of rhythm and blues like Aretha did need better teams to put them in the forefront to garner more interest in the genre. Rihanna is not R&B. Loud should not have been nominated for Best R&B Album. THIS is what needs to return.
I love Re-re, true queen and legend in every way
Who the hell posted a Michelle Williams video? Aint nobody checkin for her LOL
