Did you know that the legendary contralto singer Phyllis Hyman committed suicide?
Hyman overdosed on prescription medication on June 30th 1995 when she was just 45 years of age. The singer reportedly suffered with mental illness for many years prior to her death and she ended her life just days before her 46th birthday, which would have been on July 6th 1995.
Throughout her lengthy career, Hyman enjoyed success on Broadway and the Billboard R&B charts, although she never truly crossed over onto the Billboard Hot 100. Her highest-charting single on the latter ranking was ‘Don’t Wanna Change the World’, which peaked at #68.

I always thought it was interesting that she worked closely with Clive Davis until Clive began focusing his label attention to the debut of Whitney Houston. Phyllis was a tremendous talent. Always sad when I think of what and where she could have been today.
Nothing but talent!
She was gorgeous
This site is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than TGj. Keep up the good work!
My Queen!!! I really love her. TV One’s Unsung is a blessing because without it, I would have never gotten into Queen Phyllis. That voice, one of a kind. There will never be another.
Her old labels need to release her catalogue on CD or mp3, there’s so many great songs of hers that I am missing from my collection.
Rest in Peace, P.H.!
She will forever be missed… Her whole style and sound was ahead of its time… We miss you, Phyllis!
