    Adele 21 TheLavaLizard

The cover of Adele's blockbuster '21' album.

The reign Adele’s ’21′ may have ended in the UK but its domination continued in the US. In fact, album has achieved the near impossible by returning to the top of the Billboard 200 for a 24th week, thus matching the chart rule or Prince & the Revolution’s ‘Purple Rain’.

With 30% boost in sales, ’21′ has reclaimed the #1 slot on the Billboard 200 for a 24th week and matched the leading streak of Prince & the Revolution’s ‘Purple Rain’, which ruled the listing the same length of time in between 1984 and 1985.  In fact, ’21′ is now ranked as the 4th longest-running #1 album in the history of the Billboard 200.

Thus far, ’21′ has sold over 3.52 million copies in the US in 2012 as the only album to sell over 1 million copies this year. Moreover, with 68 consecutive weeks in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, the LP has amassed a total of 9.34 million copies since February 22nd 2011. It is placed as the 24th best-selling album of the SoundScan era (1991 to present).

In the UK, ’21′ has yielded over 4.34 million copies in sales and the 5th highest-selling album in the history of that territory. The record recently slipped out of the top 10 of the UK Albums Chart after 71 weeks.

See the leading releases in the top 10 of both Billboard 200 and the Hot 100 below:

I like 21, but this is a bit much. She just has no competition! It was so different in the past with several big artists at any one time trying to outdo each other.

…. This is getting REALLY tired REAL quickly.
21 is an amazing album but nothing ground breaking

but amber she did have competition! in 2011, she had competition from like everyyyyone, lady gaga, beyonce, rihanna, justin bieber, rihanna, britney spears, katy perry, and the list goes on.lol and she kept on going by all of them. I just think this is amazing and truly groundbreaking, im so happy for her.

and even more competition in 2012 and she is still slaying. Like trent said before, be glad real music is winning. if this was justin bieber than we would really be seeing the death of music. lol I think this is crazy how she is still killing it with literally no promotion, no live performances, none of that. i cant remember someone this big since whitney or mariah. trent i hope u do a video on adele.

@anthony Don’t get me wrong–I like Adele and I’m happy for her success. It’s not that she had no competition; it’s like everyone else has underperformed or focused on singles. She’s selling well below 100k every week but still coming out on top. I guess it’s just surprising to me that no one else is biting at her heels. It’s good for her but a bad sign for music in general. I wish there were more albums out there worth supporting.

I agree with you to some extent, how do you think it’s bad for music?

@anthony I think it’s bad for music that a successful album is such an anomaly now. I wish I could get excited about new talents and new music more often. I’d spend money on quality cd’s if I could find some. Music needs more than one Adele, that’s all!

All this is showing me is that album sales are HORRIBLE right now.

There haven’t been very man big releases this year so far and big artists who have released new albums this year didn’t push them very much, it seems.

There’s all kinds of incredible music out there, it’s just most labels aren’t pushing/promoting the albums correctly and most artists aren’t making quality albums hence the dip in sales. There’s been nothing released this year so far that’s been worth talking about. Also could be due to the fact that there’s just no real interesting artists putting out interesting music, etc. People grew tired of the gimmicky shit and now the others are left scrambling

Hopefully the end of the year makes up for a pretty “meh” year in music so far.
