Artists frequently cover each other’s songs but very rarely do these updated versions become classics in their own right. However, as you will see in today’s Way Back Wednesday, there occasions were cover songs match or even outshine the original compositions.
Naturally, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey are both ranked among the artists with classic cover songs. Yet, there might be a very surprise hits on this list that will take you on a trip down memory lane and even surprise you that they are covers. Watch some of those memorable tunes being performed below:
Badfinger – ‘Without You’
Mariah Carey – ‘Without You’
Creedence Clearwater Revival – ‘Proud Mary’
Ike & Tina Turner – ‘Proud Mary’
Dolly Parton – ‘I Will Always Love You’
Whitney Houston – ‘I Will Always Love You’
Jennifer Holliday – ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not
Going’ (Original)
Jennifer Hudson – ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going’ (Cover)
Kate Bush – ‘This Woman’s Work’
Maxwell – ‘This Woman’s Work’
Marvin Gaye & Tami Terrell – ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’
Diana Ross – ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’
They key to crafting a solid cover is to bring something fresh to the arrangement and make it your own. Many artists simply perform basic karaoke and fall flat when compared to their predecessors. That’s why so many of the popular television talent show contestants fail to have successful careers after their series’ have ended – they are just good singers and not true artists.
Which of these artists performed their covers better than the originals? Is there anybody missing from this list? Share your views in the comment section below!
I never knew “This Woman’s Work” was a cover…
What about Mariah’s cover of I’ll Be there?
Mariah has done many COVERS of songs! Clearly, Trent didn’t want to make this post about Mariah even though he easily could have since her covers are usually superior to the original.
who thinks mariah’s I’ll be there trumps the Jackson’s?
Dolly Parton might have wrote I will always love you,but
Whitney made it a classic.Tina made proud Mary a dance
type of songs.
A few of Mariah’s covers are better than the originals; I’ll Be There, Endless Love, I Still Believe
Whitney has been the most superior artist when comes to covers. IWALY, All The Man I Need, Greatest Love of All, I’m Every Woman, I Believe In You and ME, I Love The Lord, Don’t Cry For Me…to name a few. No one could top Whitney.
Mariah’s cover of I’ll Be There is brilliant. It’s the best version no offense…
I did not know this woman’s work was a cover by Maxwell. You also forgot Luther Vandross with Superstar. He covered that song. The original was done by The Carpenters. Excellent cover by the way.
These covers are good:
Oleta Adams, “Get Here”. An amazing song! Shola Ama’s cover, “You Might Need Somebody”. Michael Jackson, “Smile”, “Ain’t No Sunshine”, “Who’s Lovin’ You”. The Jacksons “Blame It on the Boogie”. Whitney, “You Light Up My Life”.
You didn’t add it to the list, but the cover that Whitney Houston did of All the Man That I Need trumps all of the covers she ever did IMO. I mean the runs at the end of the song gives me life 100 times over! Its EVERYTHING!
Young MJ Ain’t No Sunshine….he did that. lol
i love Mariah but i love the original version as well
Beyonce beautiful ones
