Our Burning Up artist Frank Ocean hopped out the closet with a bang earlier this week and now he’s singing about the happier side of life on a new song. ‘Sweet Life’ will appear on the singer-songwriter’s upcoming ‘Channel Orange’ album, which is due for release on July 17th.
Reminiscent of John Legend, Ocean glides through his lower baritone as his voice floats over a mix of drums and keys on ‘Sweet Life’. Listen to the song below:
The key to Ocean’s singing is his control of his pitch and tone, particularly in his lower registers. He is quite comfortable while maneuvering in baritone but stumbles a bit when he climbs to his higher range.
What I really want to hear from Ocean is his take on a fun, uptempo song. We all know he is a good songwriter but his music will be even more interesting if he came out of his comfort zone more often. Clever metaphors can only take him so far.
I don’t hear any stumbling although, I’m interested to hear what this will sound like live. This is a really really nice track. He may be the best of the songwriters turned singer/performers.
Nah trent, this is heat. That’s not his game, pop uptempo no way. Unless it comes naturally. He’ll get caught up like that, his career is being handled well enough. Don’t play that “I need a radio hit game’. Ocean please, stay in your Elton/Marvin/Rachid lane.
this track is soo liveee!! and YESSSS @Juiceman, not every song has to be radio hit!
I love the track…feels very summer like to me
As far as his singing, I have to agree with trent, being the avid Ocean fan that i am Frank is very comfortable and has a lot of control of his lower register.I always say this and ill say it again, he’s like brandy if she had a penis and facial hair, they both have similar tones…Anyway SANG Frank SANG!!!
I like this song
please, if he sang uptempo songs he’d be totally cliche…he knows his lane…leave him and his brooding self be.
Im really feeling this track
yes this is pool side live band margarita lime IN THAT ORDER, to my ears
I’m feeling this!
“What I really want to hear from Ocean is his take on a fun, uptempo song.” Uh, Novacane? It may not be a club banger, but it’s clearly an uptempo song. Jesus. And there’s also Pyramids (that was JUST premiered) which uses a lot of uptempo elements. Then there are other songs like Math, PDA and more. You seem pretty ignorant about his music – calling him “the male Lana Del Rey” was amusing but completely inccurate.
Hey guy who wrote this Frank has done some up tempo songs if you would actually try and listen to his music and stop worrying about his sexuality you might actually have known that.
I’m still not a fan of his music :/ he seems like a cool guy though
YOU PEOPLE CAN’T READ! Trent said he wished Frank would do uptempos “MORE OFTEN”! I cam convinced that 99% of the internet is STUPID!
This track is fire. Stevie Wonder would be proud.
I like it, very chill song. Btw Frank does do uptempo songs my favorite is Swim Good
Trent if you’re expecting Frank to jump on the uptempo bandwagon then you might as well not buy his album. He’s going to do what he wants which is the opposite. Stop acting like you know everything.
@Speechless uptempo bandwagon? You know there is a difference between uptempo and dance music right? Stop attacking Trent and focus on the music.
I like this song but Frank is still boring to me. I prefer it when Beyonce sings his songs
nice track, but MUSIQ SOULCHILD has the reciept
