New Song: Kelly Rowland – ‘Ice (Ft. Lil Wayne)’

Written by Trent | Filed under Kelly Rowland,Lil Wayne
Kelly Rowland Ice Lil Wayne TheLavaLizard

Kelly Rowland's 'Ice (Ft. Lil Wayne)' single cover.

Forget about snippets and previews because the full version of Kelly Rowland’s new song, ‘Ice’, has been released. The song, which features Lil Wayne, is the official lead single from the former Destiny’s Child member’s upcoming studio album, due later this year.

Did Rowland try something new with ‘Ice’ or has she simply gotten lazy by repeating the typical oversexed R&B formula of ‘Motivation’? Listen to the song below to find out:

Clearly, Rowland is comfortable with simply being good enough instead of the great artist whom she could be if she tried. ‘Ice’ is literally almost identical to ‘Motivation’ and even Wayne’s verse was glaringly predictable.

Has Rowland learned nothing from the commercial disaster that was ‘Here I Am’? A niche R&B single is not enough to guarantee the success of an album. Until she explores new sounds and finds a comfortable medium between her more popular European Dance music and R&B, she will continue to struggle to make a major impact on the charts.

Really, Donna Summer just passed so how hard would it have been for Rowland to use some initiative to combine a great sample of the diva’s ‘I Feel Love’ with a contemporary production style to create something fresh? Get with the programme or find a new hobby, Rowland.

      Lawd that Aaliyah gif!
But I feel the same way. She’s trying to sell this sex kitten image with mediocre results. It’s hilarious that Lil Wayne is on both Kelly and Keyshia’s songs that dropped today. He must be the only rapper available.

LOL love the GIF! The song is just okay because I know that Kelendria is capable of more. Yes, Motivation was a hit but now its time to think outside the box. She is too comfortable

Kelly, girlfriend, this ain’t it. I really want her to win but apparently she is deaf to critics at the moments when she needs to hear them the most. I feel like Kelly is being everyone else but herself. I’m rooting for her but I need her to get it together.

It’s a cute song I can definently “rock wit it” but Mrs. Kelly is going to have to dig deeper in her bag of tricks if she plans on making a statement with this album, this go around. I love Kelly and I want her to win but this is good just not good enough.

      @Malibu
If you have to listen to a song a dozen just to force yourself to like it, then the song is not good. A song should be good just from loving it during the first listen.

kelly was in dc so i know she has the potential because this whole song is basic this is something i’ve come to expect from girls like tierra marie not kelly rowland

    54. Matthew Charlery-Smith says:
      July 3, 2012 at 4:36 pm

      I’m disappointed.

It’s no surprise to me, I’ve come to expect “basic” from the Rowland for quite some time now. I don’t understand how people can be up on here calling Trent a hater when he clearly has an ear for good music and rarely gets it super wrong.

Last year when Motivation dropped Trent was at TGJ. I don’t remember what his reaction was, I recall Sam saying he liked it etc. But if we doubt Trent’s opinion let’s look at what Kelly’s contemporaries had to say. Excluding the Urban community who seemed to like the song because they wanna freak, Jeff Bhasker (Beyonce’s producer for much of “4″) called the production of the song “terrible”. He wasn’t wrong. I almost felt like the only Urban music lover who couldn’t stand Motivation last year. A song which sounded like it was somewhere between a B-Side, a demo and an interlude with no discernable percussion, melody or beat. What exactly everyone liked about I don’t know, but like I said, people wanna freak.

Fastforward to her album sales and “Here I Am” became, “Where Am I?” with drastically unimpressive (for a 15 year deep artist from one of the world’s biggest girl-groups) first week sales and a sharp decline falling out of the top 10 after 1 week and the top 20 after 2!!!

It was then I saw TGJ’s propaganda as they refused to mention this while laughing at Rihanna for her apparently “embarrassing” sales and Top 10 misses with “Man Down” and “California King Bed” (Better songs than almost ALL of what was on “Here I Am”). But hey, Kelly would give them an interview so let’s not mention her submarine-that-can’t-surface album and spin it a new way!

So, after an even worse episode of Chart Disaster FM in the UK (and what looked like a cancelled worldwide release) with “Here I Am” Kelly talks about being “motivated” to use Motown (some of the world’s best music and the foundation of Black Pop/Soul/RnB) for her “new” direction, and here we are with “Ice”.

The song is bad. No other way to describe it. It is without doubt a more interesting production than where-is-my-soundboard “Motivation” but her vocals sound half-asleep and the song is a female Trey Songz-esque trash! Maybe we should call her Kelly Songz…

I thought with the death of two of her biggest inspirations, Whitney – her vocal idol, and Donna Summer – her lookalike and Dance Diva predecessor, plus a critic and fan acclaimed Mariah Carey tribute she’d come out with something worthwhile…but no…we have Antarctic “Ice” (Where copies of “Here I Am” are still floating).

Even if there was some interesting vocal progression in this song it might have been interesting, but Kelly seems to save singing for Dance Music. Vocally, Kelly can do almost anything (except whistle). Unlike Beyonce, she actually has alot of power in her lungs which is what gave “When Love Takes Over” that Whitney-vibe. She can do smooth-beauty (see songs “This Is Love, How Deep Is Your Love), amazing emotion and runs (see songs “Simply Deep, Heaven, Beyond Imagination). So where is it Kelly? We get 3 semitones and Lil Wayne?

Truth? Kelly was so overwhelmed by the attention “Motivation” got last year (AMA nod, Grammy nod, Soul Train win, Billboard win, Platinum cert, RnB #1) she’s staying safe. This is understandable, even Beyonce used Jay-Z for both her lead singles for DIL and B’Day, but at least hers were interesting and required vocals that makes even tributing them quite hard (especially in Deja Vu). Musically they were interesting too…

Last point. If I had had 2 albums certified Double Bubble and Double Chocolate (regardless of what I thought their quality was) I’d be careful before listening to hyped up stans and blogs who say my work is “fire” coz those same 10 people around their Toshiba laptop can’t get me to #1.

Kelly, I love your music and I love you! You are one of my biggest inspirations (because of that melodic beauty called “Simply Deep”), but PLEASE don’t give me Treylendria Songz and one dance record!!!

By the way, Trent. That gif was disturbing, demonic and even more eery considering Aaliyah died while filming that evil piece of garbage. She should NEVER have filmed that movie. Anything to get ahead in the game? Don’t tamper with spiritual forces guys!!!

Trent is NOT a hater. As soon as i heard the melody i automatically thought “it sounds like motivation” . Please keep your biased comments to yourselves stans , yall only making a fool of yourselves. That song ain’t even better than motivation. KR has a lot of potential it’s frustrating to see her not getting the success she deserves

I like the song. However I only bought “Here I am ” because it was 1.99 on amazon. One day I said hey why not hit play and MAN was a surprised that album is HOT ive listened to it more than I listened to 4… I think Kelly needs to do a re release of Here I am. And go on a serious marketing /brand push with that album. There are SO many hits on that album she can only blame herself for the failure. She spends so much time promoting her fitness stuff and Lala show she forgot about her own album. Kelly can and is great I just wish she would put herself out there. Sidenote WHY is she hosting a reality tv competition in Austrailia when she has a new album/singles to promote!!?
