Did you know that basketball player Shaquille O’Neal was a rapper in the 1990s?
O’Neal released his ‘Shaq Diesel’ debut album in 1993 and it eventually achieved platinum status. The LP peaked at #25 on the Billboard 200 and generated pair of top 40 hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100 – ‘What’s Up Doc? (Can We Rock) (Ft. Fu-Schnickens)’ and ‘(I Know I Got) Skillz (Ft. Def Jef)’.
In 19998, O’Neal issued his final studio album, ‘Respect’, but it failed to crack the top 40 of the Billboard 200. Where did it peak? It climbed to #58 and it has sold less than 200K copies to date. Watch the video forĀ ’(I Know I Got) Skillz (Ft. Def Jef)’ below:
He wasn’t that bad. He raps on MJ’s 2 Bad. He just didn’t stand out amidst everyone else. Almost like Will Smith, a novelty in a “tough” genre but Will Smith could act.
To think albums could peak in the top 30 and still go platinum once upon a time…
Your music minute articles always have me saying ‘wait….WHAT?!’…I had no idea Shaq did music!
