The day is almost over and it’s already Thursday in some parts of the world but come hell or high water Way Back Wednesday will happen! For today’s late special, we will take a look at perhaps the most difficult type of singing – a cappella!
Can your favourite artist stand in front of a microphone and belt out a tune without the assistance of a band or a backtrack? Well, in today’s world of auto-tune and other technological tricks, that marker of true talent is rarely observed so let’s take a journey through time to see some of the best a cappella performances from the top vocalists in the industry.
Watch some of the top a cappella performances below:
Brandy
Destiny’s Child
En Vogue
Mariah Carey
Patti LaBelle
Whitney Houston & Cissy Houston
If an artist can really sing then going a cappella is more of a thrill than something to fear. Handling a song live while constructing a melody almost extemporaneously is a sign that performers understand their voices and have the talent to basically imagine the structure of the music in their minds.
Of course, none of that matters if the vocalists aren’t naturally gifted with the type of voices that sound pleasant without the aid of music but the more talented the singers, the better they compensate for their shortcomings. Sadly, Rihanna tone is far from pleasant to the average listener and she doesn’t have the skill to control her pitch or breathing. Watch her perform a cappella below and let me know if I’m wrong:
This is a good read!
Great post!!! En Vogue’s Harmonies are superb. I need all 4 original members to come together and do a new album. Whit & her mom sounded excellent together. Brandy, DC3, Mariah sounded great. Godmotha Patti was so superb but then again I don’t know of a time when she hasn’t been. And Rihanna was being herself.
You were wrong, although she is none of them, she didn’t sound bad here. (Rihanna). You don’t have to be so nasty to her. If bloggers are tired of artists that they deem untalented, then why keep posting about them? It kinda defeats the purpose. All the others did an amazing job.
Mariah and Whitney were the best but you should have included Nsync Oh Holy Night Acapella Its one of the best acapellas ever.
Singing solo acapella isn’t nearly as difficult as acapella with a group and harmonizing. Its much easier to detect when someone messes up. Rihanna didn’t sound bad in this, she sounds like any other little girl who wants to sing. Her problem is when she sings with music because that’s when you hear if she’s flat, sharp, whatever. That’s why lots of artists sing with loud back tracks, to disguise when they mess up. Singing with live instrumentation is also more difficult than most think too.
boyz 2 men????
Hmmm wait Rihanna wasn’t do bad here but from the looks of the date, this is pre puff and chief.
rihanna didn’t sound bad here at all but she couldn’t hit the last note. this was when rihanna was rihanna not this fake thug persona she’s sporting these days.
RihRih was cute, she didn’t sound bad, just not cute.
YAAASSSSS @ this big word “extemporaneously!”
The girls just skipped right on past that.
I thought Rihanna sounded pretty good. If she worked consistently with a vocal coach and stopped drinking and smoking, her voice would improve even more.
no boyz ii men! They were the best!! A capella is just the best!
If you could (coz i dont want to tell you how to run your blog oo) but could you incorporate more males in your articles like these.
Rihanna didn’t sound that bad….she sounds WORSE with instruments.
