Did you know that ‘Under the Sea’ from ‘The Little Mermaid’ won the Academy Award for Best Original Song?
‘Under the Sea’ was honored with the Best Original Song trophy at the Academy Awards ceremony of hosted in 1990. Influenced by the Calypso music of Trinidad & Tobago, the song was performed by Samuel E. Wright and it included several instruments indigenous to Trinidad, such as the steel pan.
Interestingly, Wright’s ‘Kiss the Girl’, which was also featured in ‘The Little Mermaid’ was also nominated for the Best Original Song honor. Watch the performance of ‘Under the Sea’ in the film below:
