Did you know that MC Hammer’s ‘U Can’t Touch This’ is based on a sample of Rick James’ ‘Super Freak (Part 1)’?
Produced by James and released in 1981, ‘Super Freak’ is widely considered to be one of the most important songs in the history of Pop music as it brilliantly combined Disco, R&B and Funk. The track was sampled by countless acts, including MC Hammer for his 1990 hit ‘U Can’t Touch This’.
‘Super Freak’ peaked at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 whereas ‘U Can’t Touch This’ climbed even further and stalled at #8. Watch the videos for both songs below:

Great write up. Rick James was so underrated as a song writer and producer
Absolutely…
The things he did with the Mary Jane Girls and Teena Marie alone was genius… RIP to the legend!
