When footage of Rihanna’s impressive showing at the 2012 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show surfaced, many people hoped that the improvements in her vocals were not simply a fluke. Well, last evening their prayers were answered as the former bleating Bajan continued to exceed expectations on ‘Saturday Night Live’.
Opting to perform only new material from her ‘Unapologetic’ album, Rihanna sang both her current single, ‘Diamonds’, as well as a rendition of a song called ‘Stay’. The studio version of the latter tune features Mikky Ekko and you can hear a preview of it by clicking the pretty orange link here.
Watch Rihanna turn heads in the right direction on ‘SNL’ below:
‘Diamonds’
‘Stay’
Rihanna hit a few flat notes during ‘Stay’, especially when she tried to sing in falsetto (who know she even had a falsetto?) but she was in relatively fine form on ‘SNL’. She is slowly starting to understand the various facets of her voice and the skin-crawling nasality of her previous shows has almost completely vanished.
What Rihanna mainly needs now is breath control so that she will have the ability to belt with power instead of yelling the high notes of her songs. Of course, the only way she will develop that skill is if she stop smoking and starts treating her voice as seriously as she does her hair.
Thanks Mr. World Premiere!

ILL GIVE HER A LOW “C” FOR TRYING….
Delusional.
She sounded a fool singing “Diamonds”, but I’ll give her credit for “Stay”. Love the gif!
She sounded good. An improvement.Fingers crossed she will stop smoking. It so overrated.
Congrats on a good performance rih!
I think we are so used to see crap performances nowadays that people think now that Rihanna is doing amazing cos she has improved a little bit. I mean that Diamonds performance was what I was expecting, nothing else. Maybe you were distracted by the visuals?
the visuals in the Diamonds performance was distracting and confusing. I don’t know what to say about that “Stay” performance. At the end of the say Rihanna sounds like Rihanna.
*day
Trent, you are right about the nasal singing. You can’t really hear it anymore. good for her
idk why you guys won’t give props where it’s due. She was into her “stay” performance and it was a pleasure to listen to her. Like you say she’d better stop smoking. It’s a good surprise from her.
She needs to continue her vocal lessons. She is improving and she needs to perfect her instrument in order to sound better.
oh and shoutout to Anne Hathaway i love that woman
wow the stay performance was actually REALLY good, the diamonds background thing looked silly though
Rihanna killed it, how much backing track did she have during these performances? Very little, especially STAY, she is def becoming a better vocalist.
She is improving, but a vocalist. I wouldn’t bump her up to vocalist level so fast. However, she did do a good job.
The show sucked ass. Rihanna had good performances, nothing to die over.
It looks like Rihanna is really trying to get it together. I wonder what has motivated her to actually give a full damn in this era. I would love for someone to ask her that in an interview.
I will say that the background visuals in the Diamonds performance were very unnecessary but she sounded fine. She was a bit rough during Stay but I will give her credit for trying to sing.
MUCH improved.
amazing as always. i love you Rihanna
Trent is overly hard on anyone but Mariah. Who we all know is a great icon and vocalist. HOWEVER, her voice with this sing one part, lip one part, than finish is a hot mess. At least Rihanna sang….BUT at one point the DAT came in on Rihanna during diamonds which leads me to believe was it “a live sounding track or was she completely live”? that was a backing tape of her background vocals….SNL is usually a live show except for JLO and Ashely Simpson’s lip singing
Its a backtrack doing her backing vocals at certain parts!
I wanted to hate diamonds but the song is absolutely beautiful and Rihanna has been really working on her vocals. I loved the way she sung that song, she really feels the lyrics.
I am not here for these theme park home video graphics.
woow im veryyyy impressed!
THAT GIIIIIIF! lol! That is my favorite episode of Fresh Prince! Learn em Viv! Anyway, I guess I can unchain Rihanna from the doghouse, itll be awhile before I let her in but baby steps.
