    Way Back Wednesday: True Musicians

Written by Trent | Filed under Aretha Franklin,Sade,Way Back Wednesday

This week’s Way Back Wednesday goes beyond singers and dancers, and into the world of those entertainers who represent music at its core. Wielding instruments and a true connection to the arts, in addition to their already memorable voices, these are the true musicians of the industry!

Long before Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys and John Legend sat at their pianos, Elton John, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder wowed their fans with their unparalleled understanding of music. Of course, playing an instrument doesn’t make an individual a better artist than someone else but it certainly adds another dimension to that his or her artistry.

Watch some of the best musicians of our time perform below:

Aretha Franklin – ‘Don’t Play That Song’

    B.B. King – ’3 O’Clock Blues’

Earth, Wind & Fire – ‘September’

    Elton John – Rocket Man

    Jimi Hendrix – ‘Hey Joe’

    Lenny Kravitz – ‘American Woman’

    Little Richard – ‘Tutti Frutti’

    Ray Charles – ‘What’d I Say’

    Sade – ‘Smooth Operater’

    Stevie Wonder – ‘Superstition’

    Prince – ‘The Beautiful Ones’

Hearing an artist sing and combine that talent with the use of instruments is an absolutely exciting experience. The fact that they go the added distance of being fully immersed in their music shows that they have the deepest possible understanding of their craft, instead of simply performing material provided to them like the average Pop star. Regardless of the result, such effort is always appreciated!

Who is your favourite popular musician? Who is best of those listed above? Vote in our Way Back Wednesday poll and share your opinion below!

Stevie Wonder is the man! Kids today don’t understand just how great Steve Wonder is as a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and musician. *sighs*

If it were not for Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Prince, and many others would not exist; they are his musical children. They all studied Stevie’s art, a la his music.

Its too hard for me to vote for just one person! I love Sade, Prince, Aretha, Elton, and Stevie very much….they are musicians to the core and no one will top them….They are truly inspiring.

I am proud of you Trent for making such a great article with thought-provoking statements! Keep it up and you’ll go places.

P.S. make a TriniTrent episode about this…..this is a really broad topic that should be discussed further and a TriniTrent episode will just put a light to it!

Good Topic, I’ve heard a lot of these artist say they pretty much had no choice but to pick up a instrument or learn to play and write music due to how the producers and record companies were screwing artist over on royalties and trying to change their sound. I cant choose just one, all of these artist put a great deal of work into creating music. Even songs they covered stood out from the original .

Great article Trent. But if I had to take issue with something it would be this whole idea that true musicianship means being able to play a instrument. I’m sorry but I do not think someone who plays an instrument is more connected and has a better understanding of their craft than someone who just sings. Is the voice not an instrument? There are those who just sing and write music are just as passionate as those who play instruments too.

Its so great to see so many of my favorite all time artists in this post! I’ve always been a huge Prince & Stevie Wonder fan! I WISH the world would start appreciating true artists again & not these basic pop stars
