If you are old enough to remember the late 1990s then you experienced the massive impact of the group of women who are in the spotlight of this week’s Way Back Wednesday. Indeed, whether you hated their music or were madly in love with their appeal, there was no denying the power of the Spice Girls!
Scary Spice, Sporty Spice, Baby Spice, Ginger Spice and Posh Spice literally ruled the entertainment industry in every regard during their short yet astounding reign at the tail end of the 1990s. Music, movies, toys, clothes and other types of merchandise were part of the Spice Girls empire, helping them to dominate every aspect of the media.
Girl power was the name of the Spice Girls game and it clearly struck a chord with people around the world because with just a handful of releases, they became the top-selling girl group of all time with over 75 million records sold. See why they were so massively popular as you watch some of their most popular videos below:
‘2 Become 1′
‘Goodbye’
‘Holler’
‘Say You’ll Be There’
‘Spice Up Your Life’
‘Stop’
‘Too Much’
‘Viva Forever’
‘Wannabe’
Perhaps the biggest misconception regarding the Spice Girls was that they couldn’t sing. However, although Posh and Ginger were certainly very weak vocalists, Scary, Sporty and Baby were all very capable in that department. Also, as a collective, all of the women executed seamless harmonies.
Regardless, there is no debating the brilliance of the Spice Girls brand. Each member represented a different type of woman – black (Scary), innocent (Baby), rugged (Sporty), ‘carefree’ (Ginger) and haughty (Posh) – so it was easy for them to attract a wide range of fans. There have been other groups who tried to emulate their girl power campaign but such efforts always seem tacky and contrived when compared to the Spice Girls.
