My vision for The Lava Lizard is to teach our readers about the music industry while making the learning process fun. So, it would be a shame for us to overlook the latest episode of TV One’s Unsung, which told the story of legendary singer, songwriter, composer and actor Isaac Hayes also known as the man behind Shaft!
Fondly known as Black Moses, Hayes was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. His contributions to Soul and Funk music were immeasurable, and his unique mid-song raps contributed to the development of the Hip-Hop movement. Quite simply, Hayes was a genius.
Unsung reflected on Hayes’ musical journey from a difficult youth to Black Moses album and his Oscar win. As previously noted in our Music Minute series, he was the first African-American to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
