Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion are often referred to as the greatest divas of our generation but there is another artist is arguably just as important as her more Pop-friendly  counterparts. That’s right, I’m talking about the undisputed Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul, Ms. Mary J. Blige!
Emerging on the music scene during the 1990s, Blige instantly became the diva of people. Channeling the sound of the the budding Hip-Hop/R&B movement, she has established herself as this generation’s Nina Simone, minus the piano but with the same tendency to erupt into a round of tongues when least expected.
This week’s Way Back Wednesday is late but I couldn’t delay this tribute to Blige’s work any further. So, watch some of her most memorable videos below:
“Be Happy”
“Be Without You”
“Everything”
“Family Affair”
“Happy”
“I’m Goin’ Down”
“Just Fine”
“No More Drama”
“Real Love”
“Reminisce”
“You Remind Me (Ft. Greg Nice)”
The true beauty of Blige’s legacy relates not to pitch-perfect vocals or massive stage productions, but to her remarkable ability to identify with her audiences on every level. From their unspoken pain to moments of joy, Blige acts as a voice for her fans.
Of course, we can’t overlook Blige’s contribution to Hip-Hop, R&B and general Pop culture. Without her contributions toward bridging the gaps between the genres, there would be no Beyonce, Rihanna or Keyshia Cole, at least not as we know them today. Simply, Blige was an icon of the 1990s and a legend of our time.
Before we go, watch one of Blige’s first television performances, during which she introduced herself to the world by rapping “What’s the 411″:
What is the best Blige song? What is the best tune from those listed above? Vote in our Way Back Wednesday poll and share your opinion!
