We’ve already established that Ariana Grande is probably the biggest Mariah Carey fan on the planet along with Kelly Clarkson and Christina Aguilera. So, I won’t burden you by highlighting the extensive list of parallels observable between her and the head diva during her performance on The Ellen Degeneres Show today.
Joined by Mac Miller, Grande sang a rendition of her hit song “The Way” for her first major television performance on Ellen. However, instead of dodging the high notes that usually give her problems to control, the young songbird soared to the top of her range and hit them all with ease.
Notably, as the vocal geeks may rush to highlight, Grande appeared to sing in her high falsetto instead of the whistle register extension used by Carey and the mother of Pop music kettles, Minnie Riperton. In other words, Grande took the Aguilera route to the top of her voice instead of the more difficult style mastered by her predecessors.

It’s great to see Grande stepping out of her comfort zone and gaining confidence in her singing. However, she really needs to master the whistle register instead of relying on her high falsetto because the latter places immense strain on the voice over time. Ask Aguilera why she rarely tries to tackle those notes anymore.
