Mariah Carey is one of the greatest singers of our time with a legacy that speaks for itself. However, with the lip-syncing accusations spreading across the web after her controversial American Idol performance, the icon had to prove that she can still belt a high note with the bes tof them. So, she appeared on Good Morning America to silence her critics.
Singing some of her most popular hits, Carey took her fans on a journey through time to the most successful eras of her career. Unfortunately, that trip through the ages included several bumpy moments and was almost completely derailed near the end. What do I mean? Watch Carey’s Good Morning America Summer Concert Series performances below and read my review:
The Good
Carey is often accused of lip-syncing the key moments of her biggest hit, “We Belong Together”, but she pulled out all the stops and tackled the song completely live today on Good Morning America. Adding several new riffs to the classic tune, she glided through her broad vocal range before unleashing the full power of her voice at the climax. Yes, this performance showed us that Carey still has a voice behind all the extra glitz and glamour.
The Bad
She is known for being a demanding diva but Carey somehow always finds herself at the mercy of the elements. Obviously unprepared, she rushed onto the stage to sing “Always Be My Baby” without her mic pack properly attached or her dress properly zipped.
In fact, Carey even missed her mark at the start of the song and appeared not to hear herself as she looked around the stage for her cues. On the bright side, without her ear piece in place, she had no choice but to perform “Always Be My Baby” entirely live, rough notes and all.
The Ugly
Carey’s new song, “#Beautiful”, is already a top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and she intends to take it all the way to the top of the chart. So, she summoned Miguel to help her perform the song on Good Morning America today, yet things went horribly wrong and I’m not talking about the parts where she said “oh shit” twice on live television.
At the end of the less than exciting rendition of “#Beautiful”, Miguel set the scene for Carey to chirp her famous high notes but guess what? A loud backtrack was suddenly switched on and she blatantly faked her way through what should have been a great television moment.
What made the situation even worse was that Carey was heard gasping and play singing over the track as at-home viewers watch the embarrassing moment. Who was singing your part now, baby? Definitely not you, Carey.
Note: Carey did sing “#Beautiful” fully live during the early morning rehearsal of the song. What prompted her decision to use a backtrack for the televised Good Morning America show has yet to be explained. Watch her rehearsal below:
