Out hit Signature Song Series continues this week with the most challenging instalment to date! That’s right, it’s finally time to tackle one of the greatest catalogues of all time, the works of Michael Jackson, as we do our best to pick his all time definitive tune. Trust me, this one is very tough!
Jackson is among the most influential and talented artists in the history of recorded music, and he has produced some of the biggest hits ever. So, how can we choose just one signature song? Check out the extensive list of records below – honestly, I couldn’t shorten the list to the usual maximum of ten tracks – and join the discussion:
“Bad”
“Beat It”
“Ben”
“Billie Jean”
“Dirty Diana”
“Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough”
“Human Nature”
“Man in the Mirror”
“P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)”
“Remember the Time”
“Rock with You”
“Smooth Criminal”
“The Way You Make Me Feel”
“Thriller”
“Wanna be Startin’ Somethin'”
Jackson had such a long and fruitful career that is difficult to choose just one signature song. Luckily, that brings us to a very important point: artists who remained culturally relevant throughout several eras of music often have multiple signature songs.
As a solo performer who generated hits in the Disco era and beyond, Jackson has tunes that defined his artistry and the various time periods during which they were released. Judging his entire catalogue, I consider “Man in the Mirror” to be a standout song of the socially conscious 1980s era of Pop music. However, “Don’t Stop Till You get Enough” was a Disco anthem, “Thriller” redefined visual arts forever and “Human Nature” has been remade by artists across the spectrum – Reggae, R&B, Pop and even Soca. It really is an enormous feat to just choose one track!
What is Jackson’s signature song? What other songs should have been mentioned? Vote in the Way Back Wednesday poll and share your opinion!
