It’s time for a new edition of Burning Up and the young man who nabs the spotlight this week is actually a familiar face. Jahmene Douglas gained popularity as a finalist on The X Factor (UK) and although he didn’t win the competition, his incredible voice earned him a recording contract.
Preceded by the lead single, “Titanium”, Douglas will release his debut album, Love Never Fails, on July 22nd. Among the songs recorded by the powerhouse crooner during his time away from the spotlight is a cover of Beyonce’s “Halo” and unlike basic karaoke singers, Douglas augmented the arrangement with lush production and the backing of full choir.
After you’ve been mesmerised by Douglas’ eyelashes, listen to his version of “Halo” below:
Douglas stated that his biggest influences are Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder, and the impact of those legends on his singing style is clear. Indeed, Douglas isn’t afraid to tackle a high note head on and he belts in full voice at the top of his range, which is very difficult to handle without serious vocal training.
Will Douglas be successful or is he destined to become another melodramatic, big-voiced relic of the from The X Factor franchise? Only time will tell but he certainly has the talent to go far in this industry. All he needs is current material and careful marketing to whichever audience he targets.
