During the last week, the blogosphere has been buzzing as old Twitter posts by top artists before their rise to fame have been dug up from the archives. Among the most discussed tweets were very interesting comments by Frank Ocean, who discussed Beyonce’s songwriting or alleged lack thereof.
“It’s a bad trend that artists try to muscle for credits on songs they had no part in writing,” Ocean boldly stated to his then small Twitter following. “Writers just say no UNLESS it’s Beyonce lol.” There are hired assassins cloaked in House of Dereon scarves on their way to his house as we speak.
Ocean made these comments long before working with Beyonce a year later on the song “I Miss You” from her 4 album. The latter even appears as a lead writer on the track, thus raising the question: how much does Beyonce allegedly pay for a slot in the credits? Does she demand a cut of the publishing in exchange for future returns on possible hits or does she simply write cheques for an agreed flat rate?
Beyonce is currently working on her fifth studio album that has been delayed indefinitely until she decides on its direction. However, with these revealing remarks by Ocean and several similar comments made by people with real talent in the past, I’m beginning to wonder if the project was stalled because Beyonce is allegedly trying to negotiate false credits on more music.
