A duet between Janelle Monae and Miguel looks great on paper but how does it sound? Unfortunately, some dreams aren’t as spectacular when they come to fruition and that is exactly the case with their new song, “Primetime”, which will appear on Monae’s The Electric Lady album.
“Primetime” interpolates the Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind?” and could have been a great meeting of the R&B minds but falls flat where it matters most – the vocals. Miguel sounds almost bored during his section while Monae tries to raise the heat but her voice simply doesn’t suit the music. Strangely, I sense this would have been the perfect song for Alicia Keys, whose rougher vocals would have played well over the production.
The Electric Lady will hit stores on September 10. Hopefully, Monae’s work with Prince will be more interesting. Listen to “Primetime” below:
