Lady Gaga is among the leading visual artists of the Digital Age so imagine the excitement that the premiere of her new video for “Applause” has caused. In fact, the icon shut down Times Square and took over ABC’s Good Morning America for one of this week’s biggest media events.
The “Applause” video by Inez & Vinoodh as an ode to Gaga’s love for her fans. Don’t assume the clip simply represents her desperate need for attention, though, because she claims it is a depiction of her connection with the millions of people who continue to support her, even when she was crippled by her broken hip.
“Applause” is expected to impact the Billboard Hot 100 this week, following its failure to crack the chart last week with its initial airplay .Watch the highly anticipated video for the song below:
It wouldn’t be a Gaga video if “Applause” was only featured choreography and a few club scenes. Ironically, however, her many attempts at being outlandish and mind-boggling still strangely fell flat as many of us have come to expect her to do anything for shock value.
Were we supposed to scream when we saw Gaga’s head atop a swan? Were we expected to gag and cough when she danced across the screen while wearing a bra inspired by Janet Jackson’s janet. album cover? I sense that a simpler video would have been far more effective because people would have never anticipated Gaga to be…normal. Sometimes, less is really more.
