Did you know that although it is often credited solely to her, Whitney Houston only performed half of songs on The Bodyguard soundtrack?
Houston lead 6 of the tracks on the first half of The Bodyguard soundtrack, which was released on November 17 1992, and the remaining tunes were performed by a range of artists, including Kenny G (“Waiting for You”), Lisa Stansfield (“Someday”) and The S.O.U.L. (“It’s Gonna Be a Lovely Day”). However, Houston’s label, Arista Records, ensured that the collection was billed as her project, particularly since she played the starring role in the film, which was ironically widely panned by critics.
Of course, Houston’s rendition of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” was an integral part of the success of both The Bodyguard movie and its supporting soundtrack. The song remained atop the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 weeks and drove the album to sales exceeding 14 million copies in the US where it has thus far been certified 17x platinum.
Thankfully, the gracious Houston ensured that all of the contributing producers and artists were given their due praise when The Bodyguard soundtrack won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1994. Watch key moments from that memorable night below:
