If you want a cheesy ballad with cliche lyrics and transparent, faux soul then call Diane Warren. That’s exactly what the executive producers of the Winnie Mandela soundtrack did when they hired the once prominent songwriter to pen “Bleed for Love”, which was performed by the film’s star, Jennifer Hudson.
Aside from cliche lyrics, “Bleed for Love” is still tolerable, thanks to South Africa’s Soweto Gospel Choir as well as added production by Harvey Mason Jr., Laurent Eyquem and David Franco. Hudson even keeps her monster vocals in check as she drives the corny message home.
Winnie Mandela will premiere on September 6 and will be followed soon after by Hudson’s lead single from her upcoming album. Listen to “Bleed for Love” below:
